Removing built in storage in old home?

I recently bought an old cape cod home that was built in 1939. It has a built in storage/linen closet in the hallway, that is the first thing you see when waking in the front door. it has three very large drawers that are very difficult to open and close and the hallway is already tiny as it is so if I leave a drawer open the entire walk way is blocked. This built in storage unit extends all the way back to the closet in one of the bedrooms behind it. I’m looking for ideas of how to better utilize this in ways of remodeling it or removing it completely to open up the hallway. Any input is very much appreciate.
