First and foremost, I would do anything I had to to get the bathroom out of the kitchen! If that meant hanging on to my appliances (or putting off the remodel altogether) for a few more years because of budgetary reasons, then hang on I would. .

Well, this is sort of a first. Most often folks show up here looking to tear out or paint wood cabinets white. But this kitchen already has white cabinets... So I am pretty much confused and disoriented... :)

The house I grew up in was built in 1910, and had some glass doors on white cabinets that were original to the house - similar to glass doors that I see on your’s. But I don’t think these cabinets go back to the 1940s. Nor does this layout. This is a more recently renovated kitchen, I believe.

Start with a to scale flor plan marking all wiandows and doorways. As for layout how long have you lived with the original kitchen? Are you changing the floor ? We need more info. Whay do you have a MW above the range whne it is on an outside wall. Why are you doing this redo ?

We bought the house 2 years ago and have not moved into the house yet. We have been renting it out, and plan on moving into it in 1 year. We will be changing the floors into hardwood throughout the whole house. We are renovating because it seems dated to me and not my taste. The microwave was there when we purchased this house. We have not done any Renovations inside of this house since we bought it...we directly rented it out. This kitchen is not original to the house and at some point, way before we bought it, it was an addition. We absolutely love this neighborhood and this house is a good house on a fantastic lot. We would just like to update it to our taste before we move in. Also, I'm not married to white cabinets. I have young children and materials and colors must be easy to maintain and keep looking fresh and clean from grubby hands. :-)

I would keep the cabinets, if they are in good condition. I would change the hardware. I would keep the island and bring in a new countertop. I would probably change out all the countertops. I would install a wood floor. Lighting would be top on my list. I don’t know what kind of lighting is there now - but I would bring in a pro on lighting. I would install under cabinet lighting. Pendant lighting for island. Maybe some recessed lighting - although I am personally not a fan of can lights all over the place, so minimal well placed recessed is what I would do. I might also install a ceiling light/chandelier on a dimmer. I see the track lighting in the current kitchen. That is definitely not from 1940s. But for the fun of it, you could keep it and update it.

Can the small wall to the right of the range be demolished? If so I would do cabinets along that entire wall and move the dining table to the front of the french doors and change the direction of the island.

And I would probably do stainless appliances.

You could paint the island base a darker color, if you wanted to bring in some contrast.

Do you have measurements for the entire room?

Great advice everyone! I do not have a floor plan for just the kitchen. But I will share a floor plan for the whole house and I can send the kitchen measurements shortly.

It would be wise to live in it for a while to see how the layout works for you, but I think you really want to do a tear-out and start over. Do have the demo done with care so the cabs and appliances can be used by someone else.

I heard this advice years ago on The Splendid Table and I think it’s good: think about how you like to cook in the kitchen and what would make it most functional for the way you cook. I would add ease of cleaning to that too. For example, I like to have the dishwasher near the cabinets where my dishes are located, so I don’t have to take too many steps to unload and put them away. Do you like to cook while chatting with guests or do you make a gigantic mess that you want to hide? While there are good guidelines on work triangles, etc., I think being aware of your habits and what feels natural to you is very important for your long-term happiness with a design.
