Do you have a bunk bed in your house?
Comments (8)When I was in Univ. ... I could sleep in a bed at hip level ... or at head level. Now, I prefer one at hip level. Though, being quite active, even agile, I could mount the higher one if necessary. After a while ... I'd probably need a ramp - well, maybe a good ladder'd do, for a while, anyway. I rather like the idea of picking through garbage (sorry, "picking up cast-off furniture") at school-leaving times, to store for the summer - we have a medium-sized Univ. 20 miles away ... and a community college (trade school) a bit farther away. There are some barns and sheds around here: all the storage space necessary, covered with a few tarps (we have birds, too). Digital cameras being what they are, one could offer a catalogue online, come fall. Landlord, the sod farmer, is planting minimal grass seed: plant building trucks that used to be called "Freightliner", more recently "Sterling", closing down in St. Thomas, city of 30,000, that he serves ... moving to Mexico ... and they're not bulding new houses, in St. Thomas, these days! They used to build "Jaeger" concrete mixing trucks in St. Thomas, as well, about 20 years ago - shortly after a strike, weeds were growing in the plant yard: they're building the concrete mixers in Mexico, now. What're our guys to do? That's not their problem - we have Free Trade, remember? Corporations find duties at borders ... ... a nuisance ... best gotten rid of. Good wishes for achieving success - one way or another - with your plan Janie GA. ole joyful...See MoreBunk Beds: Wood Species and Finishing
Comments (5)"since walnut is expensive and hard to find in 2x and 4x boards" hardwoods are not normal;y sodl as 'diension lumber.' They are sld in random leghts and widths to a grading standard for defects, in a given thickness expressed in quarter inches. 4/4 9one inch ) 5/4 1.25 inch thick), 6/4/8/4/12/4, etc It is also rough and not surfaces. A 4/4 board should net out at least 3/4 inches after thickness planing, sometimes 1/16 more. Most furniture hardwoods are much stonger tan softwood lumber, so you wil not see a lot of 2 inch thick anything except in bed rails and a few other heavy structural elements. A twin size bed can easily use 6 to 8 inch wide 4/4 lumber for rails. Go up to queen and you need some additional thickness (5/4 or 6/4 depending on width). Bed posts can be as small as 2x2 inch net in many hardwoods. Pigment stains exaggerate wood figure, dye stains tend to make color more uniform. Toning is using colored top coats to alter the shade of the wood. A dark dye should be able to get most hardwoods (except maybe maple) pretty dark....See MoreKIDS BUNK ROOM MTN HOUSE, driving myself complete nuts--HELP! ;)
Comments (18)Your carpet is very neutral and about the same color as hardwood floors would be. Just consider the floor background and ignore - your vibrant furnishings will be the eye catchers. The owls are adorable, but what about a dark blue buffalo check instead of black and white to coordinate with it?this is serena and lily, but there are lots of places with different blues this is grandin road...See More8'x3' mantle (or bunk bed?) and that color again
Comments (44)Update - will be drywalling over the speaker-cubbies. Painting the others to match the trim. Again, thanks to JTerri, whose mockup had me running off to dial our carpentry guy! Thank you, Lascatx. Its been a long post and you may have missed it, but I think we will either move to a city or a warm climate in the next 2-4 years, so not wanting to invest in anything. Especially rugs which are really hard to reuse in new spaces IME. Jterri, I think a piece of modern art could work well, but the odds I will find something i really like, that fits, at a price where I don't care if i can't reuse it in a few years, are kind of nil. But I will give it some thought, as maybe I could do a print. Also thinking of wallpaper/mural. Robo et al, I was thinking about my rug inventory. Their style is not the direction I was thinking of, but they could be worth looking at (and changing direction for). It occurs to me I have a fairly blank slate and a room with so much light. The only color/pattern is from a few throw pillows (easy to toss) and the ticking on the windowseats (neutral). There are three large off white masses -- sofa, ottoman and round table w tablecloth -- that obscure a lot of the rug and so perhaps could tone it down? So I could go with a rug that has a lot to say. For example here are 2 in inventory. The DR rug shown below was in my MBR here for a while, until i changed to a less feminine scheme w a rug I got in India. Here's the rug 10 yrs ago in my old DR in my first house. This one is really ummm, quite ... aggressive in its design. But OTOH I think the floral OTT quality goes with the highly feminine OTT vibe of my octagonal, cupola'ed, windowseated room. PS ....Wow, looking at these rooms, I think I know how I became a colorphobe! My eyes hurt. Psssst, and would you believe, my DR was a rouge color just before the photos above? Not sure I ever posted this before. In my defense it was actually a reddish pink....See Morevalentina uribe
