Replacing downdraft slide in range oven

Hi all,

Bought a new GE slide-in oven range to replace an old Jenn Air downdraft slide-in oven range. I need to remove the vent connected to the Jenn Air unit, but will I need to seal or block the vent after removal? Also, is there any trick to removing the downdraft vent attached to the Jenn Air unit? Will I need to remove the bottom plate and detach from there? Thanks, I will try to provide pictures and respond quickly!

Depending on the Jenn Air model, and the way the original installer went about fastening the flexible duct, you should be able to remove the duct from underneath after removing the lower front panel. It should have anti-tip attachments screwed into the floor at the back of the range so you won't be able to tip it forward. But you should be able to slide/jimmy it out. Just be careful of the electrical wiring and gas line. (There should be a model number label on the front inside edge of the oven and you can get the installation manual for it off the internet - removal is the reverse of installation).

What are you using instead of the downdraft? Did you install a hood?

Quick reply to Jenn Air delima. Same problem here. Need to replace our Jenn-Air stove temperature does not heat anymore. Our concern is also with the downdraft. My husband called Home depot and they have one that is a General Electric model, less than $1,000 with down draft. Should hook into our other one vent possibly. Also Sears. we're going to go check it out today

Well the Bosch Benchmark here that I'd suggest is 31-1/2" wide overall Installation manual because of the ears at the top front but requires a 30" space. So it fits. Maybe it would be possible to go with a 2" smaller sink base cab if you can reconcile the doors to the smaller cab. I'd suggest a Bosch or Miele dw with 3rd rack. "The range requires a minimum of a three-wire 120/240 or 120/208 volt, 40 - 50 amp, 60 Hz AC circuit." Your existing setup may have that although your current code may want a 4 wire.

There are a number of induction threads if you do a search for the word, they should pop up. I traded my electric for a Samsung Chef induction double oven with warming drawer. The drawer is really low and since it's just DH and me, we don't turn it on and use it for storage. I think it bakes unevenly, although it has two baking "modes" and although we use the small top oven, which fits a smaller roasting pan, we rarely need both ovens. It is convertible to one oven. But I would never go back to an electric top over an induction. Never. As I said in another thread, I've actually been using a Tovala counter top combi-steam oven because I love the way it cooks but it is a one or two person appliance.

I think there are two separate "issues". The most critical is how the down draft and slide in are installed. I would suggest contacting someone at KA or purchasing from a very good appliance store. When I was shopping for appliances there were some appliance stores where there were professional salespeople who really knew the products and could offer genuine advice. The second issue which is one you didn't ask about is that at least on houzz there is general disdain for down drafts in lieu of a overhead hood. They don't work as well as an overhead vent because heat and steam travel up and so the down draft will have limited effectiveness. However it is all that is possible in some kitchens and I know people who have them who are reasonably satisfied with their performance. However they also don't tend to cook a lot of bacon or do deep fat frying and so they don't necessarily need the highest performing hood.

@sktn77a thanks, good idea. a lot of the house I moved into feels very...custom, so I assumed whoever installed the Jenn Air unit also did some janky stuff. the sheet metal duct feels pretty secure to the wall, but i'm reading that i might be able to shimmy it out once I've detached it from the downdraft motor.

@jennsbabysky right now i have a microwave range hood combo with recirculating venting. I am confident the downdraft venting was compromised when we moved in (we didn't bother to look until years after we closed; big mistake - the downdraft motor hose was completely severed from the unit for what looks like a bit of time), so we weren't really venting anything efficiently (if at all) when we were cooking. for now, i am fine with recirculating, but maybe when a full kitchen remod is appropriate, we revisit proper venting.
