Gallica Season is starting!
Comments (38)I'm not French, and it's been a while since I took French in college, but I think you would want to pronounce 'Crécy' somewhere in between Cress-see and Cray-see. And if you want to roll your 'r' just a bit, I won't call you frenchified... I have serious Gallica envy, but not to the point where I'm gonna move somewhere where I'd need to shovel snow. I was surprised that RU had 'Cardinal Richelieu' on their sale list, but I guess his China ancestry makes him capable of managing without as much prolonged cold? I'd have ordered him in a heartbeat, if I'd thought he'd do well without however many chill hours he presumably needs. Come to think of it, one of those Florida nurseries had 'James Mason' in stock. I wonder what's up with that?...See MoreGallicas: I know I said it was too late to order, but...
Comments (9)I got home too late last night to order, so there is still time to fix mistakes. Paul- Plants can cook in the mailbox here; I know this from experience and so usually don't order anything after March. BTW, I would have had your Rook in a second but it was sold out. I was looking for your Song of the Stars instead of AB but RV doesn't seem to have it. It was your website that introduced me to Gallicas years ago - I can't thank you enough. Lance- Actually none of the roses are going to be very near each other. Thanks for reminding me about the size of Tuscany Superb though, as I did want a rose to balance Belle de Crecy on the other side of a bay tree. How about Orpheline de Juillet instead? I guess I just got caught up in Gallica Greed! Olga- Orpheline de Juillet wasn't on your list; do you know anything about it? Other than the woman who gave me BdC, I don't know anyone that gardens, except for completely vegetable gardens (I do veggies too). I do want the roses to spread out a bit, and I am quite prepared to be ruthless (I'm weird - I like pulling plants out almost as much as I like growing them). I've seen SdlM growing here and it it does well without spray. Balling is a problem though. Elizabeth...See MoreHelp ID Pink Gallica
Comments (27)I am happy to report that I was able to root 5 cuttings if this mystery plant, which you can see are happily growing. The only characteristic i can add to those discussed above is that this appears to be a nearly thornless rose. There isn't a single thorn on these plants, and the thorns photographed above were the only ones i could find on the big mother plant. I guess that disqualifies Blush Damask since I've read it's fairly thorny. Can you think of any nearly thornless, once blooming roses that look like this one?...See MoreJames Mason- hybrid gallica
Comments (3)'James Mason' is very high on my list of "roses that deserve wider recognition." In my zone 6 garden 'James Mason' makes a large vase shaped shrub to 6' or 7'. It is a very vigorous and healthy rose that even in November still has most of its foliage. What foliage drops is soon replaced by new vigorous growth. 'James Mason' suckers and so can be used very effectively to create a large background for lower growing roses or can be used in the wild garden to make the transition into a border garden of mixed perennials and roses. The best use of 'James Mason' is at the back of a mixed border of woody shrubs, perennials and roses. It is a perfect plant for this application. 'James Mason' has deep red flowers that do not show up true to color on film or pixels. It has a very large ring of golden stamens that complement the flowers for a very pleasing affect. In my zone, it flowers for a very long period in June. 'James Mason' is an outstanding landscape shrub....See MoreRelated Professionals
