Favorite online nurseries??
Comments (1)Ok, the way I save money is to buy bonsai starts. I have bought them from various locations; Miniforests by Sky is particularly good. I have had a lot of luck with miniature roses, but the places I got them from you can't anymore (Sudden Oak Death has made California nurseries off limits to me.) Paying more than seven bucks for a miniature rose is too much. I don't see the point of buying huge plants to have shipped; the shipping is a bear. It is well worth one's money to learn how to propagate from cuttings, if only because of the shipping savings. Good bonsai starts grow FAST (a lot faster than you would think). I have also had luck with Edible Landscaping, who will also sell small plants. If you are west of the rockies, Forestfarm is not such a bad deal (I got some stuff from them too, but the shipping East is horrendous.) It is a good idea to get relatives or friends to put in on a shipment; it's less that way. Oh, and if you get stuff on Ebay, be sure and check on the shipping. Some of the people are ridiculous; charging for Priority (or Overnight) and sending in a first class package. Often, Feedbackers will tell of this (even a positive feedback can have a little note of expensive shipping. Read the things.)...See MoreWhere do you purchase your Austins online?
Comments (20)I'm thankful for Kittymoonbeam, who posted the following: Posted by kittymoonbeam sunset 23 CA (My Page) on Mon, Sep 26, 11 at 11:54 "I ordered 6 roses. 5 English and 1 Madame Alfred C. from DA in Texas early this year. Of the 6, 4 showed RMV (Rose Mosaic Virus) right away and all have grown slowly, never taking off even though we had a super year weather wise. My Queen of Sweden and Eglantyne especially are runts. Alnwick and Snow Goose are close behind. Jude had the worst mosaic patterning but has grown the best. I don't want to order again. My own root Austins from Heirloom and Northland Rosarium are superstars. Charlotte and Abraham D. are up to the roof! I never had such wimpy plants from DA before. Did this happen to anyone else this year?" Thanks to Kittymoonbeam alert, I didn't get David Austin's special deal of 4 for $85 - I ordered from Chamblee's instead and got 4 oldies but HUGE PLANTS: Evelyn, Scepter d'Isle, Charles Darwin, and Eglantyne. All 4 are healthy, Evelyn gave me at least 10 blooms as a 2-months old gallon. I'll take health and performance over a fancied item anytime. Own-root Austins are better since they don't become huge monsters like Grafted....See MoreWhat are your favorite online nurseries?
Comments (5)Sorry to find this post so late, but I've found the best place to go is Davesgarden.com and click on Garden Watchdog. Then either enter your zip code to find places close to home that mostly do mail order, or look at the list of top 30 mail order nurseries. I believe you would be quite satisfied ordering from any one of those top 30 sites. Read a lot of the feedback before you order. I've ordered from Bluestone Perrenials (waited for their big spring sale) and got exactly what people had said I would get = inexpensive, healthy, very small plants. I planted them July 4th after holding them 3 weeks, and now in Nov. they are huge! Here is a link that might be useful: Dave's Garden Watchdog...See MoreBest Gift Certificate DL site for newbies?
Comments (9)OK, I went with Maryott's. It was definitely the best website for newbies AND I could order gift certificates in ANY amount that I wanted. Marilyn was such a sweetie on the phone too. Of the others, Oakes website was the next easiest to navigate but they limit gift certificates to $25, $50, $100 Marietta's website was difficult to get started on and easy to get lost in the wrong place. Their front page is poorly designed and newbies, who won't know what "2007 introductions" means, could be scared off by the first page of $100+ plants they stumble into. Gilberthwild.com must be on vacation this time of year and so is their website. I could not even see what DL they sell. Their page does say to check back after Dec 15 for next year's catalog. gonegardening, I want to see if they will get hooked by browsing through the eyecandy on a good website first. If they rave about how beautiful DL are after this first exposure then next year the AHS membership could be a perfect gift. thank you all for your suggestions. I hope this results in 3 new DL addicts :)...See Moreophoenix
