Bid on new rental - better for me
Comments (15)Thank you. I will be posting pics and measurements of the house if I get it. I know I will have to juggle some of the larger art pieces for sure. My largest piece - that print of The Palm House - may have to move to living room rather than the dining room. We shall see. I will have a covered patio at this next place although it looks a bit smaller but my 3 sunshades will make it very cozy. And I have to decide if I want to keep my dark green patio table and chairs. They would have to sit out on the rocks in the backyard. And I will have some window challenges where one window is centered in back wall with patio door taking up left side corner. I may have to think about how that will work. Right now the window has blinds and I will use my dining room drapes from Penneys and maybe buy more to cover adjacent patio doors. I am counting my chickens before they hatched. Ok, Eileen, stop decorating now. My friend back in WI thinks I should try to stay where I am since moving is stressful. But for me it will be another decorating and arranging adventure and help keep my mind off the chemo struggles I am going through. I think I may have to get off this oxaliplatin drug before it destroys my fine motor skills like drawing, sewing, and working on the computer. I will let you know what doctor says next time. My present rental house is very close to a major highway (although I do not hear the traffic) but whenever there is some accident or robbery or whatever the helicopters are flying over the house. I won't miss that. It makes me feel that I am being chased or that someone will start shooting. I watch too many cop shows and movies with chase scenes, I guess. Thank you all!!!!! And I look forward to our next decorating adventure!!!! Eileen...See MoreOctober Book Discussion - Never Let Me Go
Comments (39)I know I am ridiculously late on this discussion, but in case some crazy person comes and rereads it the way I did, I'll still post my thoughts. I had some comments on the original question of why Kathy is blind to Ruth's faults, but also some ideas about Kathy and Ruth's relationship (as was mentioned above), and the character of Ruth in general. Kathy and Ruth's relationship, and the way Kathy was blind to Ruth's personality flaws irritated me immensely throughout the novel. As many people have mentioned, perhaps Kathy is "blind" because she has been conditioned to accept the fact that she doesnÂt understand everything. From the time she was young, there were facts about Hailsham, her future, and about her life in general that she didnÂt know. Yet questioning was discouragedÂperhaps not explicitly (Kathy notes that the guardians never forbid it), but at least de facto. The students would punish each other for curiosity, so Kathy learned to keep her mouth shut and not to spend too much time wondering about it either. She doesnÂt question, she accepts. Perhaps that is why she doesnÂt analyze or look deeper into RuthÂs actions, doesnÂt realize how selfish motives are governing RuthÂs decisions. She just accepts that that is the way Ruth is, it is only when Ruth makes her angry that she confronts her. RuthÂacting manipulatively and selfishly throughout the novelÂirritates the hell out of the reader. Or at least me. Probably most people have known a person like Ruth, had a friend that was domineering, nice on the surface, but secretly deceptive and selfish. If I am honest with myself, I realize that, although I dislike it, I can identify with RuthÂs emotions and motives...if not her actions as well. Ruth isn't an unusual child. On virtually any playground, you could find a child who wanted to be the "boss", the one in charge. Especially among girls, it is common to find one child who establishes her importance by blatantly displaying and calling attention to some possession or quality that she has and the others donÂt. (RuthÂs horses and her knowledge about the plot to kidnap Miss Geraldine). It is also completely natural that the girl would then proceed to solidify her power and her importance by exercising control over the others. For example, which girls are "cool" enough to spend time with her, or which students are "favored" enough to play with or even look at her special toy or possession. In my opinion, it becomes clear to the reader throughout the novel that RuthÂs precious displays of her own importance are merely compensation for her insecurity and her fear that she is insignificant. (Which is completely logical when one realizes that they are seen by society as "creatures" not humans). This is subtley shown in the way she manipulates the other girls and alludes to being Miss GeraldineÂs favorite,. It becomes obvious during their years at the Cottages as she tries to impress the veterans. ......See MoreShould I cut down my lilac and let the suckers grow out?
Comments (8)google rejuvenation pruning of flowering shrubs.. to get a general feel for what you are doing ... done right.. its a 3 year process .. of which.. you already did year one.. and the result are those new suckers ... and yes.. it can be a bit ugly during the process ... but keep in mind.. the leaves are the food making machines.. and if you take out the whole big chunk left.. you will be relying on ONLY those leaves from the suckers .. and thats not a lot ... i think i would take one half of that Y .. after it flowers ... and probably that last old hunk... late next spring ... you CAN NOT KILL A LILAC BY PRUNING... i do it year around.. whenever the darn thing tees me off ... never heard the winter part before.. unless its specific to where ever you are????? in the alternative.. again.. noting you cant kill them.. and you dont care if you miss the flowers.. take it all out .... been there.. done that ... it really boils down to whether you might want to do it 'right' ... and look at a heapin mess for 2 more years... or just want to be done with it.. knowing you cant kill it anyway ... no theory necessary.. as to determining your state of mind.. flip a coin ... ken...See MoreRyobi mower let me down
