Transplantes Peonies, need advice.

Hello all. Someone was getting rid of these and I jumped on the opportunity to finally have some. Always loved peonies. Anyway. l did all by the book: soil, sunny area (4-5hrs, from 11-4pm) and it seems to be doing well, but, the buds aren’t growing...which I now know from reading tons, that is due to the move/getting established etc...

should I cut the buds? It’ll hurt my heart. But if it’ll help the plant, I’ll do it. I’m torned ha!

Don’t bother cutting off the buds. :) If it’s bud blast, they’ll just wither up eventually. I don’t believe they will sap any more energy from the mother plant. Who knows? A few might go on to bloom. :)

Thank you. I was just outside observing. Most buds are opaque. Lifeless. Only TWOlook more shiny and slightly larger. And with ants around. which is also the bunch that sees more sun. Starting to regret the spot l planted. there are 3, large in the middle and smaller ones on the outer sides, one of them gets 30min or so more sun per day. ...

If they are able to stabilize, and have leaves for photosynthesis, I don't see a reason why they wouldn't recover, but it may take a lot more time. It's probably easier to just wait until fall and take some grafts if you also have herbaceous roots to work with if you need more plants.

If you bought them on line a month ago, I presume they were bare root and you potted them up when received. Now I would keep them in a sheltered place until at least another month before planting in the garden to allow them to establish roots in the pots before transplanting. I would plant them about four inches deeper than they are now trying not to disturb the roots already established. I would be pleased and surprised if they bloomed in the next two years. Al

They should be just fine until tomorrow. You wouldn't want to leave them sitting out in the sun, but since it's sprinkling, guess that's not a problem :) I'd hate to tell ya the horror stories I've seen peony roots subjected to. They're a lot tougher than most people give them credit for.

If you leave them there's still a chance, if you cut them then they definitely won't ever open

I’ll leave them to be. And see what happens. I only mentioned because I resd that once you transplant, if the buds don’t grow, it should be cut to help with root establishment. Who knows. Thank you.
