Paul Barden's 'Marianne'
Comments (42)Paul! You always sound sad when I come across your thoughts (the end of your blog, some of your thoughts here). You have given wonderful gifts to humanity that will extend well beyond your lifetime. Vocation and career/financial compensation do not always coincide (nor are they meant to), and vocations also have seasons; it's okay to rest. I am a 35-year-old who has recently become possessed by growing roses, specifically the old fragrant ones, especially cream colors. I will help carry the torch until the flames of popularity are fanned again. I have an inkling the young ones ("crystal children") just coming of age who love the old clothes and hairstyles will bring about a rose renaissance in their 40s, but that's just my guess. (I had NO IDEA the English and old garden roses I was in love with all over Pinterest for my wedding could actually be grown in my garden, for instance.) Take heart! All is not lost....See Moreneed help finding Marianne Rose
Comments (64)Folks, I'm going to shill on Paul's behalf. If you love once-blooming roses, you have to have 'Marianne'. She is one of the most glorious sights you will ever see (at least in rosedom) when she matures. She's healthy, robust, vigorous, has a beautiful bloom, and an awesome (literally awe inducing) flush. I'm pretty sure she produces a bloom at every leaf node. She also has a wonderful fruity and damask perfume. I've said it before, this is the best modern gallica available (unless it's Gallicandy, lol). Think of it as a healthy, once-blooming Abe Darby, with 20x the blooms. Mine is still relatively small, but was one of the highlights of my Spring garden, even after the not-dear deer trimmed her....See MoreIn Praise of The Prince and Others No Longer Offered by DA
Comments (91)Well, Judi, The Prince doesn't really like it hot and dry, so he will challenge you about that. The plant itself doesn't mind hot and dry, but the blooms burn and get weird in the heat. I should take photos nekst summer to illustrate that. In your climate, some shade might be in order, but he's a rose, so he'll need sun, too. All my roses get the same regimen: lots of water, a wonderful compost I buy (Nu Life Organic compost, if you can find it; it's a regional product), applied in late fall and into winter when the weather permits. I'm still applying it. In late February, every rose gets a good feeding of Plant Tone or Holly Tone, whichever I have on hand, and in mid March, the roses get a feeding of Lilly Miller Organic granular fertilizer for acid loving plants. My soil is alkaline so I give this fertilizer for that reason. I'm sure your soil is alkaline, too. I've repeated this regimen so many times on the forum, so if you've read it before, I apologize. My roses don't get a lot after the spring feedings. As I said, all the roses are equal to me and get the same diet. I hope you're successful with His Highness. My rose is a continuous bloomer, by the way, so he blooms a lot when it would be best for him to rest (heat). Diane...See Moresome of the Paul Barden Roses now restocked at RVR
Comments (148)Darn you two--Mme Hardy is one of the few once-bloomers I'm hemming and hawwing about. I was thinking Boule de Neige might be similar with the button eye, which is why I sprang for that instead. David Austin loved the flower shape of BdN. I've also got Commandant Beaurepaire somewhere--maybe a dead twig--which is or isn't remontant depending on whom you ask. I'll find a place for a once-bloomer someplace, but it has to be absolutely spectacular....See Moreportlandmysteryrose
