What do you think of a roadside vegetable stand in Reno?
Comments (5)I think it is a good idea, and I would definately come buy something so if you decide to do so, let me know. I live out in Stead, and would rather give my money to someone local for something homegrown rather than a chain store. Let me know if you decide to go ahead with this! I hate going to the farmers markets because of all the crazy people down there and parking is always annoying....See Moresunroom adjacent to kitchen - what do you think of this plan?
Comments (17)Ok, so here is our latest plan. We are going to probably make the doors on the large cabinet/pantry (36" x 15") on the left taller so that a broom and swiffer can be hung on the inside of the door (the KD said this will work... and that the Container Store sells something to hang brooms. Anyone have any experience with this?). Also, we are going to add another shelf to the open bookcase that facing the desk come down a little lower (the last shelf will be about 18" from the desk. I will put baskets with the kids art/school supplies in the shelves and i may even store my sewing basket here. Lastly, I think I will ask the KD to square off the open shelves that are at the end of the wall cabinets on the right-hand side. This is match the corner/trim on the pantry as well as the straight lines throughout the house. Let me know if you have any other ideas. Thanks!...See MoreWhat do you think about my new open plan home?
Comments (28)I spent quite a big chunk of my childhood living in Argentina, with a similar culture and lifestyle to Paraguay. We also had a live in housekeeper with her own bedroom and bathroom, but years ago people did not entertain in their kitchens, so there was only one kitchen, which was a separate room with doors. It seems the open concept house, with most of the action taking place in the kitchen, has also become a concept for those in some areas of South America, hence the need for 2 kitchens. Did you know that many of the mainland Chinese immigrants with larger homes also have 2 kitchens. The second kitchen is quite small and called a Wok kitchen. All the greasy/smoky cooking is done there. You will see these quite often in CA. Since the parilla is going in an "indoor" room you will need to use a vent hood above it to remove smoke and grease. I miss a good asado de tira and mollejas! Any plans for a basement? We had one under part of the house in Buenos Aires and it was a great space for storage and my father had a small workshop set up for himself. The floor in the entry was glass block which let light into the basement area. It was a very modern house at that time. You could do much better with closet placement in the bedrooms and storage (pantry, linen closet, utility closet). The maids room needs a closet. What are you storing in room "deposito"? I know that in many area of South America closets are done as furniture pieces that buyers will add after they buy a house, but since you are building it would make sense to build them into the plan....See MoreKitchen reno - what do you wish you had done?
Comments (36)AnnKH chimed in with the same 2 recommendations that I was going to suggest. Those easy-reach upper corners are much more efficient... as are lower cabinet drawers wherever possible. You really don't need to spend on built in organizers (like pegs). I wouldn't want any drawer to be locked into one function by their presence. Only exceptions, I think, are the access devices for lower corner cabinets (although I don't have one and don't really miss it - yet) and filler space pullouts. Symmetry is over-rated. Make the cabinets the most functional for your needs. Remember, almost never will anyone be looking at a cabinet run straight on, so symmetry or lack of it isn't noticed, except on the drawings. I would strongly encourage you to re-think the lighting. I absolutely love my new disk LED lights in the ceiling, such an improvement over the 2 smallish flush mounts that I had. It really makes the whole space more inviting and easier to work in. If your cabinet maker is making Euro-style (ie, frameless) cabinets for you, then adjustable shelves should be a given. I wouldn't want face framing and non adjustable shelves again, especially in a pantry. NO I wouldn't spend money to have a pantry "designed". Lastly, removing the short granite backsplash might be a problem, because there might be a large gap that tile can't cover, or noticeable damage to the granite from the adhesive (I'm not sure about that though). Be sure to talk to your granite fabricator about that, before you make your decision. I kind of like the short rim look myself, although the ones I've seen tend to be shorter and thinner as well....See MoreMegan
