'As God is my witness, I'll never be hungry again'
Comments (26)That party sounds like fun! Even though the "I'll never be hungry again" line is one of the movie's most famous, food was not as much of a theme in a movie as it was it the book. Margaret Mitchell used food as a major theme in the book to contrast "before the war" and "after the war". On a plantation with hundreds of people to feed every day there are many descriptions of the bounty of food before the war. There were far more options on the table than the family could eat "so that everyone could have their favorites". Annie's description of what was available after the war is right on: dried peas - with a little bacon if they were lucky! A lot of the "ladies" died slowly of malnutrition and starvation after the war. Here's a blackeyed pea salad from The Neely's: Ingredients 1 large tomato, diced 1/2 medium red onion, finely chopped 1 small red bell pepper, finely chopped 1 jalapeno, finely chopped 2 tablespoons chopped green onions 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley leaves 1/4 cup unseasoned rice wine vinegar 1/4 cup canola oil 1/2 teaspoon sugar Salt and freshly ground black pepper 2 (15-ounce) cans black-eyed peas, drained Directions Combine the first 6 ingredients in a bowl. In a separate small bowl, whisk together the rice wine vinegar, canola oil, sugar, and salt and pepper. Toss all together and let marinate for at up to 8 hours in the refrigerator before serving....See More50 20 yr olds for New Years. Food ideas?
Comments (36)For our big halloween party we usually have 50 to 80 people. I usually make a crockpot of meatballs (amongst other things), but make a Swedish meatball type sauce for it. Just yesterday a friend contacted me for the recipe for the sauce for a party he's having this evening. Bob's "Swedish" Meatball sauce Ingredients: 1 stick of butter 4 medium onions chopped fine with food processor 1/2 cup flour 1/2 cup medium dry madiera 3 cups strong beef stock 2 cups half-and-half 1 Tbsp Worchestershire sauce Melt butter in large pan over medium low heat, add onions and cook and stir for 15-20 minutes until onoins are nearly caramelized. Add flour and stir until the flour is absorbed into the butter, and cook for another minute or two. Next stir in the Madiera, then the beef stock, and heat to a simmer for a few minutes to thicken the sauce. Next use a stick blender to puree the sauce smooth, and add the half-and-half and Worchestershire sauce. Pour over heated meatballs in crockpot on low....See MoreGrowing good food for hungry people
Comments (12)scottokla(7) Potatoes enjoy growing in 5.5 pH soil. Any legume seed that is treated with an appropriate inoculant will be more efficient at putting nitrogen in the soil. I saw many little purple nodules on the roots of our hairy vetch last January. We planted the hairy vetch in September and plowed it under January 31. It was grown with cereal rye and tillage radish. Not a lot of biomass but plenty of nitrogen for a crop of potatoes and a crop of corn with no supplementary feeding. The clay soil had been under hay production for many years with no inputs. If you had watched me plow it, you would have been tempted to throw in the towel right then. I didn't have any other options, so I just did the best I could with what I had. Comments (32)No, non expired batteries , water for two weeks if on a well, food for two weeks... I could go on and on. People that live from paycheck to paycheck aren't able to do much accumulating. Things do have expiration dates and then are moved into the yearly cycle to use before it goes bad. Costs If you are on well water once the power goes down there is no water, you need tubs of baby wipes to wash, a huge lot of paper plates, disposable cups, bowls and plastic forks, spoons, knives and paper towels. You need extra disinfecting cleaning supplies and bleach to cut down on mold if water reaches your home, at least one person will need tall heavy duty rubber boots, a solar phone charge, some type of lighting, a way to cook your canned food. If you can afford a gas grill you will need a back up propane tank $60. You will need many gallons of water just to flush the toilet, and extra batteries. This all adds up and is at a cost with all the inflation. So, even more than $500 to prepare if including the food you will need as well as large black garbage bags for the mess outside. Not everyone has lived here for years or live in places where they could store wood for windows, but yeah, that's another cost. Many of those with less means live in non-city water areas, rent can be cheaper. Two houses ago, during that hurricane, our house had a deep moat around it after the storm, we were lucky in that it was a newer build with the newer regulations of higher elevation and roof tie-downs. Others were not so lucky. You could see no roads anywhere, just a sea of water. And this was about eight or nine miles inland. After many days of flood waters we were able to go out with our high rubber boots. There was a large alligator under our driveway culvert. It was another long wait before all the large trees covering the roads were cleared to even drive to a store. So, yeah, if there is a hurricane warning for your area you should plan on two weeks of supplies. In some areas, people can't get to you to help right away as there is flooding and debris on roads. By the time volunteers get to you, you have already suffered the worst of it....See More- 6 years ago
