Nature’s rare oddities and beauty !

Just had to stop the car and share pics of this wonderful white grizzly bear cub. He is a true anomaly, we were lucky to see him. He turned toward us as our dog started to bark. Hope he lives a long life!

“Mike Gibeau, a retired Parks Canada carnivore specialist who is considered one of North America's top grizzly bear experts, said a white grizzly bear is “exceedingly rare.” “A white colour-phase in black bears is seen more often than in grizzly bears.” https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/white-grizzly-banff-alberta-rare-1.5552431

This fence is along the Transcanada, bear lives in Canada’s national parks. As long as he stays in the park, he is protected.https://www.pc.gc.ca/en/index

Thanks so much for sharing this, tryingtounderstand. How fortunate for you to have been in the right place at the right time. I was not aware that any bear (other than polar bears) were ever white.

It happens with deer, too, dg. Not to be confused with albinos.

I-10 on the way home from Houston. I see a hand from the south reaching for a hand from the north.

Elvis, the white deer herd that live at the site of the old Seneca Army Depot here in New York State are quite famous. I remember seeing them as a young teen. Here is a video of them --- which I enjoyed more than I appreciated seeing the herd in person when I was young (simply because I was, ya know ... young). In the wild around here (we're roughly 1-1/2 hours from the old Depot grounds), we have seen a few white-tail deer with white patches on their sides --- like paint horses are splotched. The incidence of this anomaly has increased over the years as the does and bucks with the color variation mate and create offspring with even more white on them. White or brown, I think deer are beautiful creatures.

On deer, the Wisconsin DNR calls it "piebald". Sightings of all-white (brown-eyed) deer are rare, but my particular area has quite a few albinos.

A white Black Bear would be a sight to see. Occasionally, we have a cinnamon.

Wow! We get lots of hail here but I’ve never seen anything like that.

There’s also kermode bears which are off white and whose habitat is, unfortunately, right where my DD is working and living in a very small tent at the moment.

This bear was first spotted in 2018 and wanders between Banff and Yoho National Parks. He now has a name. His name is Nakoda which means Friend in the native language of three nearby indigenous tribes.

@daisychain, I can imagine your worry, hope she stays safe and is ‘bear aware’

Something a little more harmless. Sphinx or Hummingbird moth. They love my giant garden phlox.

Kermode bears are rare as well. In BC they're also known as a Spirit Bear. They're white black bears.
