Irrigation with Well System - Design Question
Comments (4)As far as I know, you can do this, but you may get some water hammer. At home my well is 200 feet from the house. The bladder tank is in the basement. I open the tap, tank drains. Pump kicks in. Now I close my tap. Water is no longer exiting the system but there is 200 feet of water moving at 7 feet per second or so in the pipe from the well. The bladder absorbs the shock of that water, and slows it down. Now I put a T in at the well. One end of that T goes out to the nursery. I turn off the water at the nursery. 1000 feet of water in the pipe are still coming toward me, but there is no bladder where it can go. Oh, sure the bladder at the house end will absorb some of the shock, but the bulk of the water is moving away from that bladder, not toward it. net result is that all the bits of hardware at the end of the pipe have to absorb the energy. In my case this isn't much of a problem. I've done two things. One is that the end of my 1000 feet of pipe is about 50 feet from my last hose bib. This end of the pipe tends to collect air, and so acts as a buffer. Secondly, I don't have automatic valves, so the normal operation of turning off the valve is slow enough not to do damage. Thirdly, its black poly pipe, which has a certain streatch to it, and I've laid it out in a somewhat snakey manner. This allows the excess energy to wiggle the pipe. Most of the time water hammer in plastic plumbing is not a big problem, especially outside. In inside systems it is primarly a nuisance due to noise. It may be a problem if you use electric valvues....See MoreMany questions about Family Room (pics)
Comments (4)I forgot to also add that the "front door" you see is actually not our main entryway. It is a 2nd front door that just goes out to our sitting porch. This house is quirky with wierd things like that. We often wonder... why didn't they just do the porch all the way across like most farmhouses? But, in our case, there is a separate main entry with roof, then a space, then the porch was built separately from our main entryway. Its annoying because people that don't know us (solicitors) always think we are a two-family and knock on both doors! Anyhow, we really enjoy our sitting porch so we us that door a lot. We may move the door to the other side someday which would get it out of the FR. And, we are 95% sure we are putting a pass-through from the kitchen over to the FR so I don't think putting the TV on that wall is an option....See MoreWell this is embarassing...question about killing roaches
Comments (31)I haven't read all the posts but found this in my old files maybe it can help an interesting read in any event 8/24/99 -- 11:58 AM Scientists say catnip repels cockroaches NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The stuff that puts the nip in catnip is a turnoff for cockroaches. One form of the chemical in catnip repels cockroaches 100 times better than DEET, the basis for commercial bug repellents, Iowa State University scientists told a meeting of the American Chemical Society on Monday. Chris Peterson and Joel Coats said they began studying catnip a few years ago when a summer intern told them it was resistant to insects. The pair boiled catnip leaves and distilled the active ingredient, a chemical called nepetalactone. Peterson also has found roach-repellant compounds in an inedible softball-sized fruit called the osage orange or hedgeapple, but doesn't know which specific chemical creates the roaches' ``yuck'' response. The osage orange is sometimes sold in groceries because of folk wisdom that putting the fruit in cupboards or basements will repel just about any bug, they said. The fruits are filled with a sticky substance that turns rubbery when exposed to air, they said. The discovery could lead to new nontoxic methods for curbing the tenacious insects, which are more than just an annoyance around the house. The rate of asthma among children, particularly in cities, is rising. Scientists say the reason is an allergic reaction to roach excrement. ``We've been chasing cockroach treatments for three years,'' Dr. Peyton Eggleston, a pediatrics professor at Johns Hopkins University Children's Center, told The (Baltimore) Sun. ``If you could do it with a repellent, that would be great.'' The researchers tested repellent power by flooring a cage with treated and untreated filter paper, and measuring how much time the roach spends on each side during a five-minute test. Although most people would prefer to kill roaches outright, a repellent might be an effective way to keep them out of the house after the exterminators have left. So far, they have only studied the small brown German cockroaches, rather than their thumb-sized American cousins. They are just beginning to look at mosquitoes. Roaches have sense organs on their antennae, feet and mouths. The ``feelers'' seem to be the spot affected by both catnip and osage oranges, the researchers said. They have not tested the effectiveness of spreading catnip leaves around the house. While it might help turn away a swarm of cockroaches, it could lead to a new infestation - writhing, blissed-out cats....See MoreDesigning IKEA kitchen island....question about countertop support
Comments (19)mikebone: This island was installed per engineered stone manufacturer's installation instructions, but not by me. Although you can't see it here, it has a slight dip in the middle of the cantilever: Manufacturers don't always know what's best for their products, however, the guys who make money from installing their products and will lose money if they get a callback, do. Sink manufacturers say you need a 36" cabinet to install a 33" sink. You don't; I do it all the time, no callbacks. They provide clips for the installation of their sinks; clips are junk and leak. We'd still be making joints in Corian with silicone were it up to the engineers and specifiers at DuPont. Thermoforming was invented by the guys who bought the sheets; they wrote the specs after we worked the bugs out. You had better know what the hell you're doing if you go against the manufacturer's specifications, however, they should be considered minimums. The estone manufacturer in the above photo didn't wait around long enough to see the sag. I didn't have to, but there it was. Our customers are much more fussy than theirs....See MoreRelated Professionals
