Well we've actually had RAIN the last few days and possibly into next week! Pretty strange in May in No CA!

It does make it a bit easier to stay inside!

Anyway, the leeks I planted forever ago, never really got big, and we saw signs of them going to seed, so we yanked them (left one to flower and re-seed)

Making some potato/chicken/leek soup tonight with some yummy bread from down the street! Maybe a salad too. Comfy.

Sournds great! We've had lovely weather the last couple of days in the Southland, but I found leeks today too! In my drawer fridge. :) I was supposed to make soup (they're extras) and never did, so thanks for the reminder.

Do you put chicken in your soup, or just stock?

We had a cool spell yesterday - it only got up to 87°, but it will be in the 90s today and tomorrow. We're going back to Los Angeles for the week-end and then will return to the desert on Sunday. We feel safer here, as the population is less dense and it is easier for social distancing. I need to pick up a few things in L.A., including some sewing supplies and maybe some more fabric. I've gone back to making clothes and am drafting a shirt pattern today. I don't know if I have any more shirt fabric, but I will check.

Yes, they can be had in cooling-only. I think that the heat pumps are a little more expensive than cooling only, but not much. I can not comment on the relative efficiency. The heat pumps are mechanically more complex so they have more failure modes. I have three multi outdoor units for my seven room house. The reversal valve crapped out on one of mine just before the one-year warranty date. (Note to you AC guys, it stuck in heat mode and would reverse if I tapped on the valve with the butt end of a screwdriver.) I do not think that is a big consideration, but you might want to discuss that. What is the advantage of heat pumps to you? Maybe a lot and maybe none. Do you heat with oil, gas or propane? You can compare your heating costs with your current fuel and electricity rates and decide if you want to heat with heat pumps in relatively mild, but cool, weather. There is a cut-off temp where they fail to perform well when it gets colder. You can zone your heat when you are using them, adding more economy, heating only the rooms are sitting in to comfortable temp and leaving your main t-stat set lower. (This gets a little complicated if the t-stat is in a room that you are heating with the mini split.) Tip: when heating with high wall or ceiling units, you will probably want to turn up the blower manually higher than its programmed speed to keep the heat near the floor and not accumulate near the ceiling. On the other hand, your ceiling paddle fan will take care of this as well if you have them. One thing you might want to keep in mind. I can say that the Mitsu (and perhaps all brand) multi are less efficient than the 1:1 units and they do not do as well as the single units with heating at low temperatures. For the former, I think it stems from the fact that the compressors only throttle back to a certain percentage of max. For example, a single unit might be rated at 9000 BTU. If you only need a little cooling, and assume that they throttle back to 10%, you can efficiently get 900 btu out of them running constantly with no on/off. Your tri unit is probably 22,000 btu and can throttle back to 2200 btu with the same assumption so your compressor will be flicking on and off more often which yields poorer humidity control and not as even cooling. Please, keep in mind the relative nature of my comments. These things all work really well compared to window units and compared to central forced air. Be sure to consider all of your alternatives for the installation. In addition to wall-hung, you can have floor mounted, short ducts to hidden units and ceiling-mounted. That all costs more though. You have probably seen the pictures of installations with the plumbing straight through the walls to the outside of the house. Mine are run inside the walls to underneath the house. Again it might cost you a little more, but talk about it with your contractor. You should look at the MItsubishi, Sanyo, Toshiba and perhaps, other web sites to get some more information about their equipment alternatives. Your contractor should be willing to discuss all of this at length with you since you are making a big investment. I hope they can evaluate your cut off point for economical heating with the heat pumps vs. your hydronic heat. They should be able to estimate for cooling only vs heat pumps. The price difference might be trivial, however.

If window units will keep you comfortable, then mini splits will as well, but with less noise and higher efficiency. Although window units are getting better all the time, mini splits will probably do better humidity control too. Mini splits vs. ducted systems is more of a continuum than it used to be. There are mini split ducted units that can handle more than one room. The difference, I think, is that the static duct pressure is much lower so the design approach is totally different. In a well insulated and constructed home, heat and humidity move between rooms a lot faster than through the exterior walls. That's why zoning does little good in economy measure in that kind of home. It will help you with any uneven temperature problems. Complexity, as Austin pointed out, increases with the number of units so that is a negative. Keep in mind that with more than one compressor, you throttle back to a lower output than with one large one running three. That keeps you out of the cycling mode longer and keeps humidity under control better if you are not running all three units indoors. I've posted a lot about mini splits on this forum even some this week. Take a look.

@fsq4cw - how about a ballpark price just for the air-to-water heat pump? Just out of my own curiosity. Note that due to @mtvhike having a fairly large solar array and the specifics of his tariff scheme, I'm not sure that any significant capital cost to reduce his electricity usage will pay off well. This shows one of the oddities about specifics of solar tariffs. As I understand the way it works is this: his base tariff for electricity is 9.5 cents/kwh. Any solar he generates offsets the electricity he consumes (calculated annually?). BUT: any solar generated in excess of consumption is only paid at the wholesale rate, which is dramatically lower than the retail rate (call it 1 cent / kwh). Right now - without full year data - he expects to consume somewhat more than his panels generate. The upshot is that his savings from reduced consumption are limited (You could analyse this differently but I find it easier to just take what he already has as the base case, I think the conclusions are the same). Let's say, for example, he consumes 4,000 kwh annually more than he generates, for a bit less than $400 (netted out annually). If he saves more energy than that, every 'extra' kwh saved only gets him 1c / kwh. At least unless or until he adds some significant extra load, like buying an EV or putting an aluminium smelter in his garage or something. So: I'd say it makes sense to consider a minisplit primarily for the air conditioning comfort and if it also offsets some of his straight resistance heating, great, there's some modest savings there (within a 'limit' of however much his consumption currently exceeds his solar generation). Spending much additional for the 1c/kwh savings just won't make much sense financially. This is pretty simplistic as right now he has historical data for consumption and the solar array is relatively new so annual generation only estimated, and of course from year to year both may vary. And at any rate, a good argument to not rush into anything with high upfront expenses or to prioritise other projects for the time being.

I just read the manuals. If you use the Mini-stat, don't use the remote control. Control the unit ONLY from the Mini-stat. Using both would be like trying to control one TV with two remote controls; they will interfere with one another. "it seems they all measure the current indoor temperature up at the indoor unit on the wall." That makes sense as the room temperature has to be measured from a fixed location and both the Mini-stat and the remote control can be moved around. If you wanted the room temperature to be measured elsewhere, you'd probably have to use a conventional thermostat such as the Universal Thermostat. "[I] already see that IR signal is very poor from the remote and often fails to talk to the indoor unit unless I'm directly pointing it at the unit." Right. Infrared (IR) remotes are line-of-site; the remote and the Mini-stat need to be able to "see" the unit, just like a TV IR remote needs to see the TV. "or an app you use on your phone" It gets confusing because you can use a phone app to control the Mini-stat OR you can use a phone app to control the unit (maybe just some units???) directly if equipped with the so-called Smart Controller. If I were using the Mini-stat and wanted remote access, I would configure it's wi-fi capabilities. If I weren't using the Mini-stat and wanted to control the unit remotely I'd configure the Smart Controller.

It got cold here too, down to 24F for a couple of nights, froze the peach blossoms and whatever asparagus was up. Tomorrow it's going to be back in the 60s, lows in the 40s at night, so much more normal.

Good thing, I have pullets that need to go in the "grown up" chicken coop and there is no supplemental heat there. I have meat chicks in the garage in a tank and they need the nursery, it should have been warm enough a week ago!

It'll be in the 70s next week, so hopefully that will bring soil temperature up enough to plant the garden, there's no sense in putting things into the ground until soil temperature reaches 60F or so, other than potatoes and onions.

We're still in the yellow season on outer Cape Cod - daffodils and forsythia. Lows in the 40's. We're also 4th in the Covid virus stats so not going out much to do anything at all. We have 2 young Australian Shepherds and the 15 month old keeps finding his way out of our fenced yard so that has been our only social distancing.

Well, that soup was a bust! The leeks were hard as a rock, so it ended up being basically potato soup (got so distracted I forgot the chicken!) LOL Chicken goes into a few enchiladas tonight.

Annie - we're on our 4th and 5th Aussies since 1999. This #5 is a real bugger. Once he gets outside of the fencing thankfully he doesn't stray too far, but I have fears about 1) someone stealing him or 2) getting hit by a car. Tourist season is coming - he is a striking looking dog (red merle with blue eyes). He's tagged and chipped but that wouldn't matter under those circumstances. Our local police are really good about helping with lost dogs, but I don't even want to think about it.

Seagrass, I'd worry too, especially if he's a nice friendly dog that would just jump into someone's car. Amanda's Golden Retriever would just jump into an open car door and lick someone, even a stranger, so she keeps close track of her. And here we see dogs on Craigslist for hundreds of dollars, and some people have found their stolen dogs for sale there, so it's probably common everywhere.

Tags and chips don't matter to thieves, only honest people who want to see an animal returned to their family. (sigh) Living adjacent to the National Forest I've had three separate hunting dogs show up at my house, obviously very expensive hunting animals. One had lost his collar and he was a beautiful English Setter. One was a coon hound with a name tag on the collar but the phone number was expired and one was a German Shorthair. They get off hunting and their people lose them. Fortunately I was able to return all three to their owners with the help of our local shelter and animal control but if I were unscrupulous I could have made money selling someone else's dog. Elery would have kept the English Setter if we had not found his family, but I kind of liked the coon hound. Our shelter dog, Molly? She didn't like any of them, but she tolerated them in her house while we found their people, LOL.
