small G-shaped kitchen - layout advice please!
Comments (18)Thanks for keeping this thread alive! The title is no longer accurate, however, because we have discussed lots of options besides the original G-shape (which I think I decided would be too cramped, or people would feel trapped in there). Now there is a big shake-up: I think we are moving the stairs, which gives the room an entirely different shape. Here's the problem: there is no access to the basement from inside the house, just an outside bulkhead door. My husband plans to build his darkroom down there (he's a professional photographer), so we need inside stairs going down. We thought we were going to build them under the existing stairs going up, as in the plans above, but that would require a bunch of excavation and concrete pouring which would be very expensive. So, we came up with a different idea: build a new set of stacked stairs, one going up to the kids' bedrooms and one going down to the basement. We lose our kitchen table, but gain a large island. Our dining room is just a few steps away, so that's fine. We also lose a whole lot of windows, which would face north and look directly at another house, but would be our only direct light. The other windows look out to a mudroom and to a porch, so won't give a lot of light. I broke the rules and put the DW between the sink and stove because that would give me more counter space between the sink and stove. I don't think I want the sink or a cooktop in the island. The contractors who I hope will be the ones doing the job have thrown out several different ideas for stairs; space is tight and most of the ideas were discarded as unworkable. At their suggestion, we decided to consult an architect, who will come to the house next week. By my husband's description over the phone, he thought the current plan (in the picture below) should work....See MoreLayout Help- Pic and Floorplan(ish) included
Comments (6)I don't know what scale the floorplan.com was using, I'll look again....Okay, it "appears" it's 18 inches per small square... again, appears.. I zoomed in to a certain point and did a screen capture... so that could be off, but looking at the measurements too, I'd say that is fair. Thanks bmorepanic- that's kinda cool, I wondered about stealing a bit from the other room, it's really really long, like 17+ ft long. The TV is REALLY far from the couches. Never thought of anything but square. buehl- Thanks for your help, here are the details North wall to window- 36" South wall to window- 34 1/4" Door to laundry/mud room- 30" Other doorway 36" chicagoans- there is actually an original pocket door between kitchen and laundry room, but it doesn't function all that well. Aren't those really hard to take out and replace? Guess if we have the walls opened up, it would be pretty easy! Thanks all!...See MoreHelp with kitchen design please? Pics included
Comments (15)I use Microsoft PowerPoint - for me, it's the easiest way to work on other people's kitchen designs. I downloaded free graph paper from the internet and pasted a copy into a PPT presentation I then sized the graph paper image so the boxes on the graph paper each represent 6"x6" with the scale of 0.8" = 24" in real life. I created different sized ranges, cooktops, refrigerators, sinks, etc. to match the scale I saved a template and now just load the template and start designing! If anyone would like a copy of the PowerPoint template I've created, just email me via "My Page". I've linked an old thread below. [Edited to add that others can email me for a copy of the template I use.] Here is a link that might be useful: Modifying A Poster's Layout This post was edited by buehl on Thu, Sep 26, 13 at 0:38...See MoreTime to Say Thanks-Just About Done Small Kitchen Pic
Comments (43)Yay! thanks again for all who sign in to join in my celebration of the New Year and the new kitchen despite the few detractors...This is a great forum full of wonderful GWebbers with generous heart and spirit! jane: I am linking the site with my particular hood model. My ceiling height by the cooktop is only 7.5 ft because of the soffit. For this reason many vent hoods will not fit unless a metal fabricator cut the chimney part shorter. I priced the labor for cutting and it was almost as much as the hood itself. Finally found Euro that came with an extension chimney. I ended up installing the hood with the shorter chimney. It is 26" above the cooktop, 2" shorter than the recommended height. All their models have the specification and dimensions on-line for calculation if you have the same problem as I do. And call them on the phone to verify the measurements. They are very helpful and assured me that the 2" difference is okay.
