Please help me figure this out! Is it worth making a 3rd BR?
Comments (23)Thanks arielitas_mom! yes,my plan is to make a nice, big, luxurious tiled shower along the same wall that the corner shower is now. Probably about 39" w x 6 feet long (unless that's TOO long...). I do feel like this is a compromise, since a 3BR/2BA (and lts face it, most people will use it as 2BR/2BA/office) feels like it's step down, as far as the target market, from the 3BR/3BA/office we'd planned when we bought it. But it's good to hear some positive feedback from you folks about the compromise, because it really would stretch us too far to do the addition. Thank you! So what do you all think about the fact that there's no proper dining room? The DR area is really more of a dining "nook" and there's no place to put a really big dining table. ?????...See MoreHelp me figure out which sink
Comments (41)The island length was increased by 16" toward the DR - 1" for a decorative door/finished end panel on the side of the 6" cabinet and then 15" for the overhang. Since no one should sit in the space across from the wall, I put in a shallow 24" wide cabinet - it adds some storage and will keep people from sitting there :-) The refrigerator I put in is also cabinet-depth - or do you mean it's a built-in? It makes a difference! Cabinet depth refrigerators are actually closer to 30" to 31" deep when counting the doors, handles, and air space behind them. It's the refrigerators' carcasses/boxes that are cabinet-depth, not the entire refrigerator. Why? Because the doors must stick out past all adjacent items to open fully - that includes walls, cabinets, counters, other appliances, etc. Built-in refrigerators, on the other hand, are pretty close to counter-depth b/c of how they are designed. I think they only stick out a couple of inches - at most. Glad to hear the pullouts are in the base cabinets. But, that means some minor changes to the cabinets. Will you have a rangetop or simple cooktop? I'm asking b/c I think the pullouts and hoods you're looking at will look better with a rangetop or range than a simple cooktop. They wouldn't look bad with a cooktop, but they'd look better with a range/rangetop. About a bump out - unfortunately, you don't have room for a bump out. With the DW on the island and the cooktop & ovens on the same aisle, you need a minimum of 48" so the DW doesn't become a hazard and so there's room to maneuver around not just an open DW or oven, but also additional workers in the Kitchen (e.g., someone cleaning up while someone else preps/cooks a meal). I agree that it looks nice, but your space is too tight already. ------------- No, I'm not a KD (I'm in IT - Requirements & Testing, primarily). I learned a lot from the folks here when I remodeled my Kitchen in 2007/2008. I stuck around and kept learning to pay it forward. Lately I haven't posted nearly as much as I have in the past b/c life gets in the way - but every once in a while I have a block of time to devote to GW (like today!) I have been thinking of becoming certified and becoming a KD when I retire someday. It would be something to keep me busy (and it would be a job that I could leave at the office!)...See MorePlease help me figure out new kitchen layout (where can microwave go?)
Comments (10)My Electrician was asking me where I planned to install my microwave -- he assumed I was going to do a built-in. Nope, just plugging in my $60-65 guy on the countertop, close to where I keep the dishes I'd microwave on. Yes, the fridge is further into the kitchen, but on the way out I'll microwave, and then walk out to the dining region (or outdoors) to eat. I guess most food I nuke is either for hot tea, takeout leftovers, and occasionally parmesan'd asparagus. Serve on whatever I nuke the food item on/in! Having it on the counter on the way out to the dining table is also useful if I host pot lucks. If I get tired of having appliances on the counter top, I can always put them in the pantry -- but I don't want to be moving it in and out especially if guests are going to be using it. (I will store *ugly* appliances in the pantry, or under the counters.... my crock pot is hopelessly stained, for instance.) I don't use it all that often, but often enough....See MoreHelp me figure out how to install this laundry sink
Comments (19)Ok, that worked... Some more, Nearly completed installation. The shelf above the drying rod may or may not stay, it is loose fitted up there now. The cart is a 3 tiered wire cart from HD and I bought wheels off eBay. the counter is a approx 24x14" slate from The Tile Shop and adhered to a 3/4 ply that was painted at the edges to match. It just rests on top of the cart. I like it, not too heavy: Hansgrohe faucet from Costco I picked up several years ago, don't know if they still sell this one or not. this is the stream flow: This is the spray flow that reverts back to stream when you shut the water off. The sink had 2 holes on the deck but was for a bridge type faucet. So the plumber punched a center hole for the faucet, and we braced the deck with 2" treated lumber for stability. the hole to the left of the faucet is a soap dispenser. The bottle to the right is covering the other hole, that I plan to use as another dispenser. Or I could just cap it. We'll see. I could put liquid laundry soap in that one: My wall of washer/dryers: the sink is perpendicular to this wall at the other side of the shower that is at the left. Now I need to get that door painted, poor thing:...See MoreAngela Zuill
