Which layout do you prefer?
Comments (11)GO WITH B. DON'T DO A!!!! I echo most of what Buehl said. I'm also living with something similar to A. DON'T do it!! Each and every time you enter your kitchen from the mudroom you MUST walk through your work triangle to reach the fridge. Not bad if it's you BUT if you are working and the kids and company are coming through AND stopping to visit with you, it is a NIGHTMARE!! There is no logical space to stand and chat in layout A but everyone does it anyway. In layout B that wider aisle will encourage traffic to head that way, away from the work triangle. They could stand (or sit at the island) there and visit. Plan on that with company and have what you need out of that fabulous 12" or 15" area. You could build that like a hutch with an opening in the middle for a coffee and tea (water and juice) center further inviting guests that way. I have the jog from the mudroom to the kitchen and prefer it. It shelters the kitchen a bit and is not bad for bringing in groceries. We don't feel like the 3 Stooges as we come in b/c it provides somewhere to get out of the way of each other as we peel of boots and coats. We have cold winters, don't know if you do. I haven't seen your posts before so I don't know the history but you could do panels on some appliances if you are buying new or plan on replacing with panels in the future. That would avoid the sea of stainless that may or may not end up bothering you. Layout B shelters your work triangle and you will never regret that!...See MoreWhich do you prefer?
Comments (32)Can you do the stone on the front and side and leave it off or do something different on the rear? Like jannicone said, that little strip of stone between the doors always looks odd to me. Thanks Annette. My feeling is I do it all around the whole garage or not at all. Otherwise it looks like those houses that have the fancy brick on the front of the house and when you go around the side, it's vinyl siding. That always bugged me. CP - This is totally OT but what kind of windows are you going with in your build? Single hung and fixed for the square windows. We're in hurricane country so must use wind impact windows. The brand we're using will be Custom Window Systems. The grids will be the simulated divided lights....See MoreWhich porch do you prefer?
Comments (80)First thank you all for commenting. When I break ground I plan on starting a new thread and will start with a link to all the previous threads, including this one, which is why I wanted to make sure this one was updated with the "latest and greatest" in the exterior elevation. In fact last night I was looking over some of the old threads and was aghast at what I actually started with. While the original layout wasn't terrible, the elevations were ghastly. LOL. (And I'm being kind.) I'm truly thankful that so many of you stuck with me on my journey so far and were so helpful in getting my house to where it is now. A special shoutout to the architects, especially Renovator8, Virgil and ARG. Thanks Russ. I like it. How wide is it from window to window including the door and your trim? what change did you make to your friend's entry? Thank you ILoveRed. In the drawing above from window to window is probably a bit too wide in the elevation but it's correct on the plan. So it will probably be just a bit narrower, but I wanted to have it to show the builder how I wanted it built. It's about 9 1/2' from trim edge to trim edge. Oops. Here's the friend's entry. I've been debating about the molding around the outer frame of the door entry. With or without? On the right side elevation, what is the band under the study windows? That's actually behind the master (for now until we change it) but it's the A/C and pool equipment. Both need to be enclosed according to code. However I will NOT have AC's below my bedroom window, especially with my bed up against that wall! I'm expecting them to move it to behind the study....See MorePlease vote - Which house do you prefer?
Comments (53)Thanks so much all! I appreciate everyone's input. To clarify - I was leaning towards modern farmhouse but now that I'm in the neighborhood, I'm drawn to the colonial homes native to the area and I'm leaning towards something more traditional. Those are not the *exact* houses I have to choose from - just three very different styles - I'd say #1 is more victorian, #2 craftsman, and #3 modern farmhouse.. This has really helped me let go of the modern farmhouse style that I do like, but it's just not right for the area.. Thank you!...See MoreBryan
