How often do you re-pot your potted hostas?

I have a couple potted hostas, wondering how often they should be re-potted? One has been in a Spin-Out bag (remember those?) tucked into a ceramic pot going into its fifth year now -- is coming up beautifully again this year, but I did get to wondering about it.

I usually go by how much the potting mix has compacted. When the hosta has "sunk down" in the pot, I repot it. I generally do not totally clean off the roots when I repot. I usually just clean off the worst of it. When they have to be divided (leaves get smaller), I clean off the soil entirely (pretty much). It gets to be like hard packed clay after several years.

That's just how I do it. I'm not an expert.

oh come on bkay.. you are one of two pot queens here ... lol ...

media failure is based on drainage .. as the media compacts or breaks down ... water does not flow freely thru it ... usually defaulting to puddling.. and running down the edges ..

eventually when you unpot.. you find all the roots that were in the middle.. dry rotted .. and are dead.. and all live roots are out at the edges ...

with a plant in the ground.. this is when you would start seeing fairy rings ...

how do you SEE that in a pot ... well.. take it out of the pot and look ...

generally though.. i guess i wouldnt go more than 2 or 3 years.. depending on the quality of the media you started with ...

It depends on a lot of circumstances including the humidity in the air, the amount of leaves that are on the plant, where they are in their dormancy cycle, how big the bulbs are and what type of medium they are potted in. The simplest answer is to water them whenever the soil feels dry to the touch. When they are actively growing new leaves or stems, check quite often because they needs water to fill the expanding cells - during those times you can water even if it's not completely dry, which might be every 5 days or so. During this time I also let water sit in the tray and it gets drawn into the pot usually in less than a single day. When the leaves are mature and the plant is no longer blooming, water when it gets dry to the touch which might be every 2 weeks. When it's going dormant or has gone dormant, wait a little longer even after it's dry; it might be 4 weeks or you might water it just a single time during dormancy. Hippeastrums resent too much water and will do better getting a little less than they like than they will getting more than they like. They are good for people who often forget about their plants. The worst that happens is that the flower scape is shortened due to being too dry, or the bulb regenerates its size slower than it would otherwise.

Hi Everyone, Thanks for the tips. Cactusmcharris, Sorry if that was confusing but if you saw the post where I had the pic, you would have seen what we are all talking about. I bought this and got it about 4 days ago now. It was bare rooted when it was sent to me to save on shipping. I in turn had to pot it back up and try to get it to re establish in a new pot. Hi Josh! Great to hear from ya! I have used rocks when I am rooting my plumeria cuttings and i thought about doing the same thing with the jade. I have not had it move since it fell out on the 2nd night. So far so good. I did water it all ready. I actually watered it in the first day. It was in a box for about 2-3 days and I have noticed some leaves shriveling up and dropping. I know it is normal but it made me want to water it more and Lorraine(fom K and L cactus.) I think I will put it out tomorrow and see how it does. I will slowly intoduce it to light. I want to keep it indoors since it looks so great right now but I know it can continue to color up even more and our nights are getting cooler. I know next week we are going to warm up again so maybe I will bring it back in again. Thanks everyone for the help. Andrew

How often or how many times should I pot up?

I usually only pot up once before they get planted in the ground. I start them in the Jiffy pellets or six cell starting trays, then about 3-4 weeks, repot them to small styrofoam cups with holes poked in the bottom. They have a few sets of true leaves when I do this. By this time, they are usually ready to spend a fair amount of time outdoors, and I ween them off artificial light. I set them out during the day and bring them inside the garage at night if it's supposed to get below 50. They live very happily in those styrofoam cups until I'm ready to plant. However, I do keep a close eye on the water situation once they get some size to them. Actually, I just bought cups and potting soil yesterday. I plan on repotting about 50 or so today. I started them from seed on April 1st(and a few as late as April 5) and hope to get them in the ground by the first or second week in May. I usually try to get stuff planted around Mother's day. I was worried I was getting a late start on starting my seeds this year, but they are growing very rapidly and I shouldn't have any problems staying on schedule this year.

I didn't know there was such a thing as a splatter guard for the stove -- will have to look into that. There's a gap behind the stove and the back wall so I can't prop anything up on there, but the glass cutting board is a good idea. The deep fryer is in the garage, but DH does pan-fry/high-heat saute stuff on the stove. And guess what? I'm the one who oil-stained the grout already!! I was browning some chicken pieces, on the front burner no less, and a big splat of oil hit the backsplash. I did wash down the splash that evening but darn it a small section of grout got hit good. Soapy water and a grout brush didn't work, 409 and a grout brush lightened it enough to where no one will ever notice but me because I know it's there and it bugs me. So yea, I probably should re-seal once a year.

btw ... this is not a rule specific to hosta ... drainage is important to all plants .. especially perennials ... and double especially for cold winter storage.. you want them to drain properly for storage ... in fall

Several people in our club have all of their hostas in pots. They never go beyond 3 years. We need to replant several of ours this year since they are in spin out bags that line pots in the gorund to avoid maple tree roots. We are not looking forward to the job.

It depends for me. I have some portion of my hosta overwintering in the ground so I repot it every year, that is till they get enough root mass to be solid and safe to overwinter above ground.

Older pots year every few years and it is a job. Also one need to think if you want to restrict it size and keep in same container for long time or keep going with next larger size. Some hostas are happy and will fill next size real fast... and some will just sit and sit and sit....
