Refrigerators, GE vs. Whirlpool and Top-Freezer vs. French Doors
Comments (17)Ok - some followups: Lightlystarched - As someone who owns a French Door, I was clearing up your neighbors misconception so others here would not be mislead Vegas t - Hopefully you will really like it as we do. Like you - we did not want ice / water thru the door. had that on our old side by side - it broke twice and took up lots of freezer room. I love the little water dispenser inside - and the filter system is really nice. Plus the ice cube maker is very functional in the bottom freezer and doesn't take up lots of space like an in door unit does. Lm20021 - yes the french doors are very nice and take up lote less room when open - much better IMO than having a single huge door on a top-freezer model chipshot - yes - icemakers may be standard on most 25 cu ft models - but some are thru the door, some are in the bottom freezer. That does make a difference. I attached a link to the 25.8 cu ft Samsung french door with icemaker / water dispenser BUT not thru the door below so you can see what I mean Here is a link that might be useful: 25.8 cu ft Samsung...See MoreFrench Door/bottom freezer vs. Side by Side
Comments (28)daryl r said: I am seriously thinking about that bottom freezer drawer again. I have HS aged kids still and we use the freezer a lot for kid 'fast food' items like chicken wings and bagel bites, along with lots of frozen meats. I need to really think through how the bottom might work. We have an Elux CD FD fridge w/icemaker and, like ideagirl, find its sliding basket system to be great at organizing and separating the frozen stuff. Our teens have zero problems with this setup. We also like the FD set-up up top and particularly like that you can open just one side if you know where something is or the whole thing to get the "vista". We wouldn't consider going to a SxS or full door....See Morebottom freezer - door or drawer
Comments (10)When I was little we had the bottom swing door SubZero. When I was in my 20's it was replaced with a drawer with interior drawer. I think the problem comes in how deep the drawer is! A friend of mine has a freezer drawer that is much deeper than the SZ. I think her fridge was designed to hold a lot of frozen convenience foods, so there's way less fresh food space and more freezer space. That's probably the kind with the "big drawer" that people are complaining about. The SZ freezer, as well as some of the other free standing units on the market, have the freezer compartment more for small things, and assume you'll have a freezer in a pantry or garage for the "real" freezing, and that you're cooking more from fresh. The shorter freezer generally has the swing basket or bottom drawer tall enough for a half gallon of ice cream, or a big container of stock. and the shelf or upper drawer deep enough for the ice maker tray, and small items like sausages, giblets, etc. I haven't seen the Amana, but I can tell you a like to like comparison on my folks' fridges: The door swung free and because it's so far below eye level it felt like more of an impediment than when the upper door was open. Then the swing out basket blocked the aisle from the other direction. Also, the whole "shut the freezer!" thing contributed, because it was a two step process. First swing the basket shut then the door. Same issue as with roll out shelves in cabinets. The shelf is moderately inconvenient because you have to get inside to reach the back. The similarly shallow bottom freezer drawer with interior drawer doesn't block the aisles much at all. You don't have to pull it all the way out to just reach in for ice or something in the front. You do have to push in the top drawer to access the bottom drawer, but that's not a big inconvenience. I think the drawer is a lot better if it's not too tall for comfort. My advice to you would be to measure the height of your current freezer, and compare it to the ones on the units you're looking at. Go look in the showroom and try a piece of paper in the bottom and picking it up with your bag (i.e. baby or cat) in the crook of one arm. You'll be able to judge for yourself how much you like it....See MoreFrench door vs. single door with bottom freezer in bisque
Comments (26)"Sears is divesting themselves of that brand and will shortly no longer be carrying it. " That might be the spin, but I bet it's the other way around. Whirlpool is dropping back to only the obligated rebadged material until Sears finishes going down the tubes. Less risk to have inventory in their warehouses and stores. I believe they are on a Pay by Scan arrangement there. I may be out of date on that though....See Morebbstx
