Comments (18)Pics are clearer but there still appears to be some dark gray in the (first) close-up of the front brick that isn't noticeable in the brick in the back or in the (second) full width pic. If you remove the current roof over your front stoop, you could add extend the high forward facing gable on the front supported by large wood posts and beams for a really good look: [https://www.houzz.com/photos/entrance-rustic-entry-minneapolis-phvw-vp~693855[(https://www.houzz.com/photos/entrance-rustic-entry-minneapolis-phvw-vp~693855) If you were to add water proofing to the area below floor level to the right of your front stoop and build a retaining wall (with steps leading downstairs within the wall) from that right front corner straight forward in a line with the right side of the house, you could level up your front yard and hide a significant part of the brick of which you're not so fond. Leveling up the yard would help you with landscaping as well. You and your husband could compromise: you could both keep the brick and yet hide part of it with shrubs -- even create a front yard patio....See MoreExterior update on 70s colonial half brick- HELP!
Comments (8)Really nice house. Would not paint the brick -- not ever. You might consider removing the two trees leaning toward the house before a storm --wind storm and/or ice storm or even lightening -- puts them on your roof. While you already have room to create a portico, if you remove the two trees, you'll have plenty of room for a larger front porch -- either one will look good with forward facing gable with its ridge point the same height as the gable on the left side and it would be a good idea to make a decision on that before replacing the roof. If you've been considering enlarging the house to extend the upstairs over the single story section on the left end of the ground floor and/or adding a porch or room elsewhere, Decide that before redoing the roofing. If a new roof is needed, make that your priority. medium/dark gray shingles are as close to neutral as shingles get. Newer metal roofs now have an extended warranty. Talk with your homeowner insurance company and see if they can give you any information about how metal roofs age in your geographic location that might help you make your decision. Probably would not choose metal myself with that style house -- they tend to look better with steep roofs. Siding color you have is neutral and works well with the brick so if it doesn't need changing, wouldn't make that a priority....See MoreHow do you find paint palette for exterior when half brick?
Comments (31)Nice house. The ?taupe? color shown work really well. Or you could use a shade darker brown. The white trim works well for either. You do want the garage door and the garage trim to be the same color as the siding. You want your front entry door to be the focal point of the front of your home -- NOT your garage door. Would not complicate the fascia/trim at the peak of the forward facing gable over the garage only to leave the large blank space between it and the garage door, though you could add a practical triangle attic vent there. If you add "trim" without purpose to a gable, add it to every gable. If you don't like that large a blank wall space above the garage door, you could add a window (or two) or even faux window. and/or vertical trim https://www.lowes.com/n/buying-guide/exterior-paint-buying-guide and/or vertical with horizontal that, together, shrinks the space -- or something else in the middle of the space. https://www.etsy.com/listing/800927252/tree-of-life-metal-sign-metal-wall-art?ref=pla_similar_listing_top-2&pro=1&frs=1...See More1960s Half-brick Ranch, Curb Appeal Needed!
Comments (6)Roof: I would stick with the GRAY roof rather than changing to brown. Gray is much more versatile. Brick: I like your brick as is. Don't paint it. Front Door: Don't replace with a 'Craftsman' door. Your house isn't Craftsman. You can get an appropriate wood door that isn't Craftsman. Garage door: Paint to blend with the brick color or one shade darker than the brick. Best to not accent the garage door. You can remove the plastic inserts in the top garage panel so that the windows are square rather than that sunburst pattern and that will be a very nice update for your home. Shutters: Remove them. Your beautiful windows aren't designed for shutters and they clash with your exterior. Porch posts: Don't accent your posts - they aren't a feature. Have the color blend into the house so use the brick color. You have a great home! It just has a mashup of a couple of different styles now. When you finish your improvements, I would love to see how it turns out. Have fun!...See MoreMarylee H
