Closet drawer height suggestions

Here is our closet for the master. Question is should we have fewer drawers that are deeper? Like 1 top and 3 bottom with each being deeper or is the layout here good.

Closet design is personal. What are planning on having in each size drawer? That is how you decide drawer height and only you know that.

We plan to keep our keys, wallet and earrings in the top drawer. The bottom four- one we use for PJs, one for undershirts, and one for socks. Most other things we use shelves and hangers.

It makes perfect sense to me. What program did you use? I'd love to have one like that. It's awesome. My first thought is if there's anyway you can use the upper half of the area cutout because of the stairs it could possible add room to hand tops or other shorter items. That's assuming you don't have this all framed in already and wouldn't have to tear out walls to do it. Although looking again at your first drawing you may already be as far over as you can be. If so there's not allot you can do but use the walls for hooks to store belts, scarves, jewelry and such. About the only other thought I have is it to bump it out as low as you can for a shelf to store bulky things like luggage that you don't need to be handy every day. That could possibly still allow you plenty of head room going up and down the stairs.

I know nothing about Elfa. I have not taken a look at what Target has to offer. In our mud room, we installed Ikea PAX / KOMPLEMENT closets. They are 95 inches tall, which means we had just enough room to stand them up, once we assembled them on the floor. The height means we can hang a one-piece work jumper inside, if we wish. I like the flexibility of the Ikea closets. No drilling into the carcass of the cabinet, leaving nasty holes. I like the variety of available shelves and drawers and clothes rods and containers.

What color to paint my closet shelves and drawers?

DD has suggested that I keep the walls and trim of the closet white but do the shelves, the wood shelf supports, and drawers in the same pale green as the walls in the vanity area. We have a very good painter who caulks and seals all the little gaps and spaces and paints the shelves with some special finish that makes them look like cabinetry. (He painted the built in bookshelves the carpenter did in another bedroom and they look beautiful.) The reasoning for DD was that she thinks I'm reacting to looking in the vanity mirror and seeing the reflection of white drawers and shelves directly behind me in the closet through the doorway. She feels that if I saw green drawers and shelves that I would have the more coordinated effect that I'm trying to achieve but still maintain the light bright look that a closet should have. Of course, she knows how nuts I get about things sometimes and she's probably thinking that it doesn't really matter at all and I'll get used to the white once the closet is full. Anyway, what do you think?

It's difficult to say how much actual work (cost savings) you can perform under the direction of a professional but that might be an option. If you are comfortable assembling pre-cut kits, you should be able to assist a pro. Even small jobs that involve hanging drywall/paneling,doors and 2x framing requires or at least benifit's from a helper. You would need a pro for one day. Two hours to measure and make a material list for you to buy,plus four hours on the day he returns to cut and nail things togeather then two hours to tape and texture. Material for all wood,no texture will be a little more expensive and take longer to trim but you should be able to cut and install trim useing an inexpensive miter box/back saw. At any rate you can paint/stain/finish the project. Find a custom cabinet shop and give them your sketch ups for an estimate.

You need to know the dimensions of the drawers and see if they would accommodate what you plan to store there. And while the FACE of the drawer may be 6", the inside dimensions are smaller/shorter. Will the dimensions require a new way of folding or can you fold the items the way you normally do? That's what you need to figure out.

I have my closet designed and ready to go when Elfa has their end of summer sale. I measured the way I fold my shirts, underwear, socks, etc. all to make sure they would fit in the drawers. I had gone to the store before the SHTF and made sure the drawers worked. You can't go wrong being a little type A here. LOL.

Elfa is currently 30% off, and has been for quite some time. My garage "project" was delivered today. I have several Elfa closets, installed by Container Store a few years ago, but we're tackling the garage ourselves. The Hoarder Husband has been told if it doesn't fit in the Elfa system, it's gone.

As far as the OP's question about drawers, I would maybe combine the bottom two into one 12" deep drawer, on each side. Or do 3 that are 8" deep, each. In my closet (California Closet), the drawer fronts are 9", with 6" interior sides.
