It's actually a bacterial disease. Hopefully TX will have a better response than FL. We have no response it seems. Around me there's hundreds upon hundreds of acres of abandoned groves infested with all varieties of citrus diseases, including and especially HLB. I have wrote letters to the state agriculture Commissioner as well as my locally elected representatives explaining that these abandoned groves are cesspools of disease and as such constitute a public nuisance. They must be razed if we are serious about fighting this disease. Whether the state or landowner pays for it is irrelevant in this emergency situation. I didn't receive so much as a form letter reply. Not even a "thanks for your input" form letter. Not from one damn person. That Adam Putnam would much rather try to weasel in to national politics than do his friggin job here.

No, Kris, once a citrus tree is infected with HLB, there is no treatment, no coming back. It is simply a matter of time (about 5 years) before the tree dies. And yes, it is a race against time for those of us in citrus-producing states that do NOT have HLB (California, AZ, for example). We're trying to save our commercial citrus long enough until a treatment or cure can be developed. Merry, I would talk to your better garden centers to see if anyone can safely source what you're after. Texas has the Asian Citrus Psyllid, as well as an outbreak of HLB that they are trying to contain and slow the spread throughout Texas, so you're right to be careful. Patty S.

Although the insect took a while to get to the U.S., it was found in Florida in 1998 and by 2000 it had spread to 31 counties in Florida and presently in all counties. The lastest information I have found yet (and it is probably outdated already) the insect is in 31 counties in Texas. California now has a quarantene -- I forget what area since around Labor Day. Louisianna reports in May 2008. There are many articles to read on the subject, but there is so much going on that many of the articles are outdated within months. Brass
