Lakehouse landscaping - formal or no? (pics attached)

Zone 5A. Please ignore the mess, we are in the middle of a messy outdoor reno:) I would like to change my current baseball diamond patch of grass into something with more curb appeal. We have large armour stone which blocks the drop down to the lake so sadly that can't be changed. The rocks are different heights and there are gaps between so I will probably place shrubs between some of them. I roughly placed blocks in a circle to see if that would look good. I want to maximize the amount of planting space for shrubs, roses and flowers and I do like the look of formal gardens and symmetry. I plan to place a line of 5 or 6 large black estate planters between the grass and the gravel driveway to clearly define where the parking ends. I am willing to remove any part of the grass and do whatever it takes to make this look good. Ideas are very much appreciated!
