Freshening up the exterior
Comments (29)I LOVE the idea of an awesome and unexpected color for the door. I have mocked up some turquoises.. aquas.. and purple. I do think I need something to give it some character but since I am in PA, I need something that will look good all year round. I lean more towards turquoise or purple right now but they may all change when I get some color on. Kelli, I do understand that the shutters draw attention to the windows but I can't imagine just plain ol' small windows either. I am thinking it will look like the outside of a correctional facility lol! I was really torn when I was over again early this morning. I have to admit that I really really dislike a lot of early spring flowers and I just *have* to pull the bulbs because yellow and red doesnt work for me even a little bit. Perhaps I will replant them somewhere less in my face-- or I will offer them to the neighbor who was a good friend to my grandmother and who has even MORE than my house does. I won't cut down the rhodies now-- for one thing, they are full of buds.. for another, I do love them for the 3-4 weeks they are in bloom. I am still loving the sunken patio idea-- discussed it with my bf yesterday and today and he's liking the idea but wants me to check costs and issues related to water drainage before I get my heart set on the idea. Too late. LOL! He likes the idea of a 3 season covered porch but that alone wouldnt be enough for me. I like the sun and I need a place I can grill all 4 seasons (he is NOT much of a griller-- but he's not the food preparer at all. He's the eater! ) I am definitely narrowing in on a gentle brown-- coriander seed or elks horn so far but I'd like to check some of the other color collections. Thanks again for your thoughts.. and OMG love the aqua kitchens but with Anjou Pear on my walls, I think I need to settle for aqua accents. We'll see.. the kitchen remodel is a year from now so we'll see what direction I go....See MorePruning my 20 years old tree peony?
Comments (7)Wow, beautiful! Your yellow one is so lovely! When I was a member of MAPS, I attended a session about pruning tree peonies. I remembered the recommendation was to prune off very old non productive tree peony branches all the way to the base in order to rejuvenate new growths and allow newer branches to develop and grow better. Also, if you see branches that grow into each other, you should prune those off also. Though the tree peony in question at the time was 15 years old. So maybe you can mark those old non blooming branches (or ones that produce small flowers) next year when it is blooming so that you can have some idea which ones to prune in the fall....See MorePlease help me freshen up the exterior
Comments (18)If the foundation is structurally sound - which could be a concern in a house of this age - then there is no issue with plant roots :-) That is a rather firmly held horticultural myth. And it is not clear from the photo provided but if the front yard is as tiny as I imagine it to be, getting rid of a lawn is not a bad choice....mowing and tending a postage stamp sized lawn is a PITA. The same area with paving and groundcovers offers a very low maintenance alternative to a lawn and sets a stage for a few well placed containers or one or two specimen plants....See MoreBrainstorming exterior options for a 120 year old home
Comments (14)OP says: ...The space is there, it would just be a matter of building permits. Most of the normal codes can be bypassed since this is such an old home. Definitely worth looking in to! Thanks! ^Are you sure that you don't have to pull permits for work to your home? I know that in my area there is more than one reason to pull building permits. For example: if you change out the plumbing, electrical, roof and HVAC system because they are older than 30 years (required here by insurance co's) then you must pull a permit for each of the preceding items. If you don't, the insurance co won't "count" it as done and not cover the property even if they allow you to make premium payments they won't cover a claim. And if the work isn't done, it fails the 4-point inspection. If you own it F&C and are self-insured, it wouldn't matter, but otherwise it does. Also, the city/county can and will send you a notice to cure. Either pull the permits or tear out the improvements or face daily fines of up to $1000/day. BTW, that wrap around porch is beautiful! I hope you can incorporate it into your rehab....See MoreCreative Visual Concepts, Kevin Strader
