Let's talk about layered light

There couldn’t be a more important time to make use of layered light than now, while we are sheltering in place due to COVID19. Why? We are in our homes more than ever. Crafting different lighting environments will give our days more depth, and provide more clearly defined routines.
As a reminder, the layers of light are ambient (general illumination), task (work), and accent/decorative (ambiance).

Waking up with natural light > attending to your morning route with ambient light > adding task light to the ambient light while you work and home school your children > shutting off the task light for lunch and play breaks > defining the end of the work day by turning off ambient and task light, and turning on decorative light to set the mood for dinner and relaxation…

If you didn’t design your home with wired layered lighting, there are fairly inexpensive options available to you.
You can retrofit your non-integrated (build in LED) fixtures with smart bulbs that are controlled with an app, or voice control.
I recommend using smart bulbs that change color temperature so that the same fixture can provide bright task light AND warm ambient light.
You can control multiple bulbs at once, and, with additional accessories, set the lights to operate on a timer.
Have your lights remind YOU when it’s time to shift gears.
