Need help with Sofa Color

We just got an apartment and are starting to decorate. We have purchased a rug but need help deciding what color couch to do. We don't want anything too light. Any suggestions would be much appreciated! Comfortable is a plus! I have been looking at Room & Board.

IMO the rug needs to go back until you figure out the rest of the space the only time I would have a rug first is if it was a very expensive persian type . As for sofa color please no dark brown or black . If you are thinking thinking fabric look at some of the great indoor fabrics from Sunbrella to get something that will at least wear better. I love leather but it is not for everyone., There are tons of beautiful colors for both fabric and leather , I think we need more info from you. Some more pics of the space and it is helful to have idea books we can check out too.

You have a lot of darkness with the brick and flooring, do you have a large amount of light coming into the room? Take this picture with you when you go look at rugs and imagine how it would look in your room. I would not use the rug you have above for many reasons. What direction are you going? Modern, Eclectic, Traditional etc.? We need to know more.

In general a dark sofa in a room without context is not going to look great. You have to commit to a color and pull everything together to make it work. People think erroneously that if they choose a lighter, more neutral color they it will be easier, more forgiving to decorate around. I don't think so. Lighter, more neutral colors don't stand out as muhc, but they need just as much support from textiles, accessories and art to shine. Thoughtful color combinations are worth the effort. Google images of dark green sofas and see what people do to make it work. If it were me I would put down a kilim/flat weave rug in a pale background color with some green, any shade, in it and some red. Then I would look for richly patterned throw pillows in a light background with either green or red accents. I would keep an eye out for very colorful art. I like metal and glass coffee tables with a few nice books, and maybe a potted cyclamen. That's just me thinking out loud. Look at what talented designer do to give you an idea of how to start. I think a dark green sofa is woth the effort. Who needs more sme old, same old, half baked decorating ;-)

My 2 cents: Sofas are not something you buy often so I would go neutral and add throw pillows for color. Make sure to get stain protection so your sofa fabric lasts longer. If you want a statement piece with a bold color, do that with an armchair or ottoman. That said, is West Elm your only option? The quality of their construction, in general, is not the highest compared to Crate and Barrel, for example. Because a good sofa is such a long-term investment, I would recommend paying for good quality construction. Good luck!

I see what you've done including/incorporating your sofa's pinkish tan in your pillows and rug and using analagous deeper pinks. You might have better luck with a color scheme that relies on whites and then contrasting colors (navy, charcoal, chocolate brown) and lets the sofa's pinkish tan stand by itself. (Patricia is right that photos of more of the room would get you more helpful advice. She is wrong, IMO, to fling fly-by snark at your sofa instead of advice; and in how she spells the word "please". Consider white curtains with some texture, not pattern. Target often offers attractive panels - look for their Threshold or Hearth & Home/ Magnolia brands. What a charming room! I like that rug.

It’s really hard to say without knowing what styles you like, colors, how you’ll be decorating the rest of the room, what other furniture you have, other art, size you need, cloth or leather preference, etc.

I did very basic mood boards to hopefully help with seeing what your preferences are, or what you definitely don’t like. I used the Stevens sofa from Room and Board in two different colors for the first two, and added some pillows (West Elm) for fun. The third is the Wynwood sofa, in “Vento pewter”.

But again, I just don’t know enough info to really be able to give good suggestions. This is just throwing decor darts in the dark. :)

Jinx how would you know this space is charming unless you see a lot more than I do. Gray in no shade works with that rug. The rug needs to be the last thing to choose not the first as I said. That brick wall needs a fabulous piece of art much brighter that what is there too.

I find pretty brick walls charming, Patricia, as well as those nice floors. And as usual, I disagree with your one-size-fits-all myopic decorating proclamations. Your opinion is not fact.

Oh no! These designers (and many more) put grays and browns together. Call the Design Police.
