Windows: Do you prefer a Grid, or completely Grid Free?
Comments (21)Glass was also taxed on size in some areas (mostly in Europe) so the way to cheat the tax man was to use smaller pieces of glass which were less costly tax wise. (This was particularly true of mirrors which were heavily taxed). So it was both initial cost and cost later :) Just like us today LOL Windows were also made from the bottom of glass bottles in many places in the country. You see it on occasion in England and in original window's in cabins in the US (my grandfathers place had a couple). They were a poor man's glass window. I'd take a couple things into consideration in choosing. Style of house, and what you're blocking with the extra wood. In my home, I'd never want the smaller glass expanses because I am on a lake with fabulous views. I don't want tiny squares of lake...I want huge expanses of lake (some of my windows are 6'x8' picture). I'd never want to change that to fill a style desire :) But in some homes...the view is not a main feature, so I'd think about what looked best on the house, before I'd consider the view out of the windows....See MoreFrench doors and window alignment and clashing muntins.
Comments (21)Will you have any window dressings on any of this, or will they all be naked all the time? To me, the drawn alignments in 10:21 (time on the houzz post) looks off. I'd see about a little more header/trim rather than have uneven divided lights as shown in that picture. I know you really want your window trim to match what is elsewhere in the house, but is elsewhere in the house visible from the dining area location? Where will a compromise be less bothering to the eye? To me, if you have divided lights everywhere else, and then unevenly divided lights in the dining area, that is more bothersome than what was originally proposed....See MoreWindow muntins, or no muntins?
Comments (12)@cpartist - Wow, I think we agree on something... I don't think my architect had muntins in mind, because I did not see them on any of his exterior elevations. I feel like the muntins will definitely tip the house towards the prairie style, which I think would cause us to choose a more earthy/older feel for the interior decorating and finishes. Going without the muntins would instead tip the house towards modern, and have a newer, brighter, more sterile feeling interior. My wife and I are the outdoorsy type, we like camping, hiking, and other outdoor activities. We still are drawn to the clean modern look though......See MorePLEASE HELP- NEED EXPERT MUNTIN ADVICE FOR WINDOW LITE PATTERN
Comments (11)The windows are Loewen (aluminum clad and wood) with divided lites and grills that look truly like multiple panes of glass. They are similar to Marvin. I really like muntins and don't mind the detailed look. There are many historical homes in the bay area with grid patterns and they look lovely. Hopefully it won't be as dramatic in real life- the dark lines in the cad drawing may make the facade look busier than it actually is. The nicest houses do show consistent patterns but there is such diversity out there. I love the looks below. Beverly- thank you for the photoshopped option! It is a great idea and one that I didn't consider. My only hesitancy is that out of all the grid patterns - the two over one (upside down 'T')- is my least favorite. Functionally it is probably the best, easiest to clean, least expensive, and best to keep the view. I don't mind 3 over one- but our windows are so narrow that the lites look very skinny. Is there another simplified pattern that you can think of? We can't change the front door location but the 'official' front door is door 'I' - the only single door on the lower floor. Front door location is confusing but that is what the architect designed and she felt there was a need for a 'formal' front entrance. The is a fence and paved walkway in front of the house that should help orient people not familiar with the house. Our family will probably enter through the breezeway doors 'L' - closest to the garage- or through the garage. Here are full elevations of the house including the breezeway and garage....See MoreLINA JONES
