New bathroom tile cleaning tips

Hi. I just moved into my brand new house and the builder gave us nothing on how to care for our tile bathroom. I have enclosed pics of our bathroom shower tile. The wall tile is Concorde Liberty (https://www.atlasconcorde.com/en-us/collections/acusa/liberty/gres/franklin-gray/matte/30x60_matte/) and the floor is a mix of honed and textured marble tiles (https://www.build.com/emser-tile-m05metr1212m2h/s1447908?uid=3406406). I am hoping someone could offer advice on how best to care for the tile so it doesn't ruin them. I want to keep soap scum from building up thanks!

Best is to, at LEAST, squeege the walls and floors after use. BEST is to dry off and use the towell to dry off the walls and floors and then leave the door open for a while and/or use a fan. If you do this...it will last forever. By the looks of the drain, you have a Schluter Kerdi installation. That goes a long ways toward a quickly draining installation.....

I use a Bissell steam mop to clean my honed travertine and my porcelain tile. If you're going to use chemicals, stone needs a neutral (pH balanced) cleaner. You can find dedicated stone cleaners at Lowes and Home Depot. Monica

I'm guessing that your bottom tiles are on the shower floor? Really, I don't think the grout lines should be turning black in two days in a new home unless you have an excessive amount of heat and humidity in your shower area. If your grout was sealed and no water can get under the grout and grow mold, it should not be turning black so quickly. If your house is new -- have the shower construction checked. The bleach is disguising the real problem; in most homes bleach will clean/remove surface mould, but when it comes back repeatedly so quickly, something else is going on beneath the surface. It's possible that all you need to do is clean with your bleach; let it dry well and seal it. If that doesn't work, get an expert in to check it out before it becomes a more serious problem. I used to have a problem cleaning the buildup from hair conditioners in our tub/shower. Then someone posted that the "fume free" version of Easy Off cleans scum like a breeze and it is safe on any surface. I found out that it works even on our formica tub surround. Cleans hard surfaces and the faucets and shower head too. It does not dissolve lime buildup. I need to use CLR or something similar for that. Only problem is the fumes. You will need to hold your breath and avoid inhaling the fumes. Strange, given the name. Works on the deposits of caramelized grease and oil that form on the edges and crannies of my self- cleaning oven. Nothing else ever did.

But the elf also recommends using bleach on sanded grout. I had white grout with white countertop tiles in my kitchen. I did use bleach and it never whitened the grout. I tried sealing it and it didn't do anything. That's going to be the issue--what cleans it when it mildews? Are you squeegeeing? Graywings recommended a steam cleaner and I've heard they are good but you need to keep refilling the reservoir because the hand-helds are so small. Worth looking in to. I'd see if the John Bridges forum has addressed cleaning methods.

Also, you want to use a neutral PH cleaner for anything you might do there....

you'll want to test your water pH. Marble is typically between 7pH and 10pH. Lower pH will etch your stone. Higher pH water generally is a result of water hardness-i.e. calcium- which means you will get build up. A whole house filter can help and also using neutral pH cleaners regularly as described above by others. Again, neutral pH is always relative to the type of stone. DO NOT skip on applying sealer every year and I'd even recommend twice a year. Eventually you will need to polish at some point, but removing etching costs a lot more when polishing than just doing a top polish to bring back the shine, so take care of the stone.
