Confused -- exterior horizontal slats on windows -- modern home
Comments (21)You may actually want to rethink the entire window. It is going to have to be almost fully covered when the bathroom is in use, and in a contemporary house this is problematic because many treatments aren't all that contemporary and these will have to be huge (say like a large top down shade. The pulley mechanism will be hard to operate) The better alternative Is probably the one suggested by your architect: louvers that tilt Up toward the outside, allowing you to see out and light to come in, but blocking the view In from below on the street. Or on the inside, some sort of motorized shade (which won't work in the shower). There are a number of houses with entire walls of glass in my neighborhood, and it seems rather pointless to see them covered almost 24 hours a day with curtains or venetian blinds. Particularly cheep curtains or blinds because the windows are so big the homeowner can't afford proper window treatments on all this windows and to pay the mortgage. Some of them are little better than sheets hanging in the window and it really cheapens the look of a $1M + house ....See MoreExpectations of Kitchen Designers? (Interior designers?) – pls help
Comments (2)I think what you're running into is Kitchen Designers who are really Cabinet Salespeople. Did you ask if they are NKBA-certified (not a guarantee of a good designer, but it's a good first step)? So many KDs are really cabinet salespeople - they know a lot about their cabinet line(s), but not so much about good design. Did either ask you about your lifestyle, your family composition, your plans for the kitchen, etc.? If not, that's a red flag. Check the Layout help FAQ for the types of questions KDs should be asking you - and that you should be prepared to answer. How do I ask for Layout Help and what information should I include? If you cannot find a good KD, then I suggest starting the design process by posting your space here. We have several professional KDs as well as several talented amateurs who can help you. When you're happy with the layout, go back to the KDs and see what they have to say - both for cabinet specifics in their cabinet line(s) and pricing. If you do find a KD, then see what s/he comes up with. I would still come here and post the layout for additional critiquing. Between your KD and here, you should be able to come up with a functional layout and a nice looking space. Good luck!...See MoreBoard and Batten color for my house?
Comments (16)Well I have to trust the architect here and go with a natural color, and have hunter orange doors. They know best, right? My masterpiece: Jokes aside, I've run renders on a few other colors available, and slept on the whole idea. Right now I feel like any deviation from my original white/black idea is a compromise I might regret. Not once have I had second thoughts on it. Lately seeing it becoming trendy is one thing, but there's no other houses in my area that are similar. Changing a color changes the whole idea of simplicity I had, at least in my opinion. Everyones idea's are wonderful, and I think I could make them work well on this house. Like blue or green with wood accents. Or simple white with white. I wanted a red house at one point too, but there's already 2 on the same street. Adopting any of these ideas however, has a cascading effect on other design elements beyond just a palette swap. These were my 2 main inspirational houses: When I saw these I thought, "wow, that's it!" In todays world of hyper-personalization of everything, I've eschewed variety and always gone with simple. I wear 1 brand of plain T-shirt, jeans, shorts. I like authentic, and I like quality. When I look at these houses, I feel I see a reflection of myself. No fascades or stuck on details, just a house. It's so rare to see a house not try to have standout features that it's unique to not have uniqueness, if that makes sense. It does to me. Thank you for the feedback, it's helped me move forward with more conviction. Marjen, anderson 400 windows are wood, and they'll need finishing anyways, so finishing them black is no difference. My house isn't in the right price range to really justify wood windows, much less triple glazed wood. With vinyl, the plastic comes either white or beige, and coloring anything else requires another step in manufacturing....See MoreHow to style board and batten wall?
Comments (65)I think that you should fold down the comforter and then place your pillows on the sheets. As for a blanket at the foot of the bed I would go with something other than white. You need a bit of contrast. Maybe for the pillows that go against the board and batten you can go a bit darker than white so it will pop a bit. I do not mean bold colors, but variations and texture. I love so many of the example photos shown here....See MoreRelated Professionals
