What to plant with a Peaches and Cream Japanese Maple?

I am looking for small companion plants to install around the base of a peaches and cream Japanese Maple that I just ordered The area is light shade or dappled shade in zone 7. I am thinking about ferns but not sure what would be a nice subtle complement to the maple. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You might also want to consider heuchera. It comes in loads of colors and there are some that would complement your tree nicely, providing some textual variety. As this is a smaller tree, consider a ground cover like wintergreen (gaultheria), too.

What you plant at the base of a Japanese maple should be something low and spreading and that needs minimal maintenance going forward...... a groundcover. If you like the idea of a fern, then I'd suggest a spreading groundcover type fern like Adiantum venustum. Fully hardy in your zone, evergreen and the new, early spring foliage emerges with a bronze tint that will compliment the spring coloring of the tree.

Peaches and Cream will never get to be a big tree so watch what you place around it afa size is concerned.....you don't want the adjacent plants to overwhelm and distract from the tree. And if at all possible, plant everything simultaneously. JM's have very delicate and sensitive root systems and resent any disturbance in their root zone so if you plant the area at the same time you plant the tree, you should avoid this issue. Also, avoid any plants that will need routine replacement (annuals) or dividing (many perennials) as the digging and soil cultivation necessary can damage the roots and introduce pathogens.

I had hosta, epimedium, korean bleeding hearts (dicentra exemia), hakonachloa aureola, Japanese painted fern, and a bunch of other stuff under my Bloodgood. It was very shady as the neighbor had big trees and there was a 5' fence just on the other side. I also put a goldfish pond underneath. Unfotunately, it caught that blight and begin to die a slow death...Here's what my garden looked like the last year I was there (2004). You can look at other items in this album, as there is a garden bed planted underneath a Norway maple and along the fence was shaded by the Norway and the neighbor's oak trees (all mature). I don't think Japanese Maples are in the category of fussy garden plants, but are instead in the category of tough landscape plants. Neither can I imagine that there is any scientific study of wind tolerance applicable to this plant. Most of the information about that kind of thing comes from anecdotal stories which can be highly inaccurate or flat wrong. Usually one tries to satisfy a plant's known general cultural requirements (water, light, soil) but other than that, it's usually pay your money and take your chances. With landscape plants, the chances of success are usually very high. Of course one plant is never going to solve all of the problems in a yard. It's a matter of placing it where it will solve one problem. Other plants can go in other places and solve other problems. Of the options you've presented, I like position 1 because it has the potential to block the view of the sides between the neighboring buildings and because it is not overwhelmed by neighbor's plants. (BTW, if you picked a position where neighboring plants hang over into your yard, you'd probably need to cut off the overhanging portion in order that your tree would have a chance to grow without developing a profound lean to it. You have the right to remove what is encroaching from the neighbor's into your yard ... but only to the lot line.)

Planted in front of the windows will effectively block the view out. And as the trees grow, they will effectively block a lot of the facade of the house from the curb or street as well. Fireglow will evetually get to be 12-15' tall and with an equal canopy spread. It is not easy to judge from the photo provided if moving them as your landscaper suggests will still allow enough room for them to grow unobstructed or if they will potentially also block or screen the view, FWIW, Fireglow will look best and can be most appreciated for its looks if it is backlit by late afternoon sun. I would try to locate where that situation is maximized.

Thanks for the feedback - I mixed in a decent amount of perlite as suggested, since some of the mix near the bottom of the container definitely looked a little broken down. I potted up three 1-gallon JMs in this mix today - Calico, Shu Shidare, and Komachi Hime. This is my first attempt at JMs in containers, so fingers crossed things go OK!

In Fall the colors of 'Peaches and Cream' turn a brilliant yellow to orange with darker tips. Lobes have a crinkled shape and sharp teeth. Requires partial shade with well drained soil. Companion Plants: Goes well with 'viridis' and 'Beni Schichihenge' Japanese Maples as well as Variegated Hakone Grass.
