What to plant with a Peaches and Cream Japanese Maple?

I am looking for small companion plants to install around the base of a peaches and cream Japanese Maple that I just ordered The area is light shade or dappled shade in zone 7. I am thinking about ferns but not sure what would be a nice subtle complement to the maple. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You might also want to consider heuchera. It comes in loads of colors and there are some that would complement your tree nicely, providing some textual variety. As this is a smaller tree, consider a ground cover like wintergreen (gaultheria), too.

What you plant at the base of a Japanese maple should be something low and spreading and that needs minimal maintenance going forward...... a groundcover. If you like the idea of a fern, then I'd suggest a spreading groundcover type fern like Adiantum venustum. Fully hardy in your zone, evergreen and the new, early spring foliage emerges with a bronze tint that will compliment the spring coloring of the tree.

Peaches and Cream will never get to be a big tree so watch what you place around it afa size is concerned.....you don't want the adjacent plants to overwhelm and distract from the tree. And if at all possible, plant everything simultaneously. JM's have very delicate and sensitive root systems and resent any disturbance in their root zone so if you plant the area at the same time you plant the tree, you should avoid this issue. Also, avoid any plants that will need routine replacement (annuals) or dividing (many perennials) as the digging and soil cultivation necessary can damage the roots and introduce pathogens.

I would consider that normal, yes :-) Young JM's, and most especially those that are newly planted, will often go through some color changes. And even some early leaf drop. But keep it well hydrated (not soaked) and it should replace whatever is lost. I recently purchased an 'Enkan' and much of the growth is greening out. And all new growth is coming in green rather than red. But it is in less sun than it was at the nursery :-) Your new tree may be in more sun than it is used to, hence some early coloring.

In some trees, as the concentration of sugar in the leaf increases, the sugar reacts to form anthocyanins and these pigments cause the yellowing leaves to turn red. Planted in front of the windows will effectively block the view out. And as the trees grow, they will effectively block a lot of the facade of the house from the curb or street as well. Fireglow will evetually get to be 12-15' tall and with an equal canopy spread. It is not easy to judge from the photo provided if moving them as your landscaper suggests will still allow enough room for them to grow unobstructed or if they will potentially also block or screen the view, FWIW, Fireglow will look best and can be most appreciated for its looks if it is backlit by late afternoon sun. I would try to locate where that situation is maximized.

I grow my entire collection of JM's in containers. Some have groundcovers as well.....some don't. Because of the maple's sensitivity to any root disturbance, I prefer to use a groundcover than can be easily planted and then pretty much ignored :-) Not as easy to do with larger perennials or even small shrubs One that looks great with a red leaved JM like Fireglow is variegated wire vine, Muehlenbeckia axillaris 'Tricolor' (sometimes just sold as 'variegata'). It is not nearly as rampant a grower as regular wire vine so you can safely ignore warnings that might be associated with that. I am also a big fan of Veronica peduncularis 'Georgia Blue', which is fully evergreen in our climate, turns a ruddy, russet color in winter and has electric blue flowers in late spring with typically a late summer/early fall repeat.

In Fall the colors of 'Peaches and Cream' turn a brilliant yellow to orange with darker tips. Lobes have a crinkled shape and sharp teeth. Requires partial shade with well drained soil. Companion Plants: Goes well with 'viridis' and 'Beni Schichihenge' Japanese Maples as well as Variegated Hakone Grass.
