What color should we paint the exterior of our home?
Comments (18)Congratulations on your new house! The brick is beautiful! Some bricks are yucky. Please don't paint it. Painted brick is ok, but it defeats the purpose of having brick. Painted brick needs more cleaning. It's also considered fine to paint brick by some people who have seen it or lived with it, while other consider painted brick a step down in elegance/sophistication. If you have a choice, why step down? Colors for your home style would more appropriately be dark. Dark grey to near black with undertones of blue to violet to brown are appropriate with the brick color. When you replace windows, make the exterior dark too. White just is really bad with these houses. This article is the best I've seen for fixing up homes from the era yours was made. https://www.brickandbatten.com/split-level-house/ This is useful for the interior: https://stylebyemilyhenderson.com/blog/8-decorating-renovating-rules-to-make-your-kind-of-a-bummer-split-level-home-so-much-better You have a bit of a dysfunction with your entry door being to the right and your drive to the left. You also have a big blank nose in the center of your house. Both could be enhanced by putting a covered porch on the house in front of the center bit. It should extend over to the right to cover your entry door. Wide stone or stamped concrete steps down from the new porch to the driveway would look stunning. I like installing radiant heating under stamped concrete so I never have to think of shoveling them. If you tear up your driveway, install radiant heat under the new one too. https://www.warmzone.com/ A good designer and architect will be part of any really good contractor. Comments (18)Thank you for all the comments. I really like Prospect Heights Row House with the Dark Grey/Blue combination. When I say Scandi/Norwegian I am referring to contemporary styles (attached images below) and while I acknowledge the house does have Scandi colours at present, they painted style is more 80s ski chalet. Any visual apps/websites i can use to play with trim/windows/pillars/door options? Its such a great house, keen to respect the exterior whilst bringing it bang up to date....See Morewhat would you do to improve the exterior of our house?
Comments (15)Thanks all! Ok, so no shutters. Got it! 1 less project ;) And we are actually fog coating with that beige color stucco. No paint. I do love the mock up of the darker color! But I wanted a lighter color for hopefully keeping the house cooler. I would have loved off-white but afraid of looking dirty. I’m happy with the color. Need to get the other 3 sides fog coated now. And I think I like the darker brown trim along the roofline too. Our windows are brown/bronze so I think that’s a nice compliment. But I’m still unsure about the trim around the garage and front doors. I like the idea of a lighter color (grey/green or a greige) there. Something that will compliment the house & the landscaping which will have all shades of green. And also my teal/turquoise pots (that I don’t have yet). I’m trying to get it to have a Mediterranean feel even though I know it’s not a Mediterranean style. ;) But I’m having a hard time envisioning the grey/green or greige trim. Can anyone mock that up? Any other thoughts on the trim? Here’s a pic of our front entry. It’s a work in progress! But you can see the trim. And clearly I need to tile the floor but we might extend it a bit. I’m thinking travertine. It was a very 70s dark brown time with flowers (?!?). We’re getting there! Thanks all! Keep the ideas coming please :) Love them!...See MoreHow do we improve the exterior of this stucco house?
Comments (16)lots of diff ways to do it. notice the darker door here, the address plaque and the light. around the base they did the white stone work. or you could do a copper plaque. w/that terra cotta, the copper and black and wood tones would look amazing. Notice the wood doors. if you can't do wood, try and find some other door styles and try black. this is SW Iron Ore. would also work I have the spanish tile and this black/gold stacked stone around my door. I painted the door a dark BM Gray color. you can see the Wrought Iron trim color w/my stucco color I'd paint your fascia trim the Wrought Iron color. (I should have used it instead of the platinum, but I thought my roof tiles were going to be a lot darker) you can see how the warm wood tones in the gate and the garage door set off the colors here's the wrought iron color on my gutters. I think this color on your roof trim would look great: Landscaping will be the finish. remove those shrubs in the flower beds and try something diff...See MoreRelated Professionals
