Putting in a terraced retaining wall, how wide does it need to be
Comments (12)It's extremely counter-intuitive, but a layer of gravel or other coarse material does not improve drainage either in a pot or just below a planting mix in a bed. (At the subgrade base of a retaining wall, with or without drain pipe is another case entirely.) Water has considerable difficulty moving either vertically or horizontally from a mix composed of smaller particles to one with large particles and a much greater percentage of air spaces. The phenomenon is called "perching" and there are many technical explanations online as well as a good discussion of the issue on the container growing portion of Garden Web. Even though rhododendrons are indeed shallow rooted plants, what can happen is this: With a gravel layer say 8 to 10 inches below the planting mix the lower few inches of that mix becomes saturated. Capillary action can cause the entire depth of planting mix to reach a saturated state before it begins to give up water to the gravel layer. Shallow azalea pots ,btw, are not intended for long tem growth. They're a florist convention for quick growing azaleas having more to do with aesthetics, tradition, weight, etc.than with long term growth of the plant. That's why they are very rarely used by commercial rhododendron operations which need to grow on their plants for a number of years before they can be marketed....See MoreDo these nightstands work together?
Comments (12)I really like the old style, personally, but it just can't be found. I am not even sure if the one I did find is a guarantee. The local Thomasville store does have one of the new styles in stock and it is actually a floor model on clearance so it is a good price, but it is final sale (there's only one there). Unless they are willing to make an exception I don't think I can take it home and return if it doesn't work. I can't quite tell if the wood is a match either. It looks very close but it might be slightly lighter in color than my bed. I stopped in quickly at the store last night but didn't have much time. I will have to go back and look again. I just wasn't sure if the style worked well with the bed. I would prefer a closed back (chest style) as opposed to open because there are outlets and cords in sight behind the nightstand from the lamps and clocks (as is the case with what I'm currently using for nightstands). But I'm trying to keep my options open because I am really wanting to finish the room....See MoreCould These Work? Nightstands
Comments (9)Valinsv.. I just measured my frame, mattress and boxsprings. 33 inches. Tall! the nightstands would be 31 inches tall.. so that should work, eh? I also just moved my old stand right up close to the slide to see what it would be like .. access wise. I could still get into the closet. Then I realized the cl chests are actually a good 5 to 6 inches narrower than my old ones. Perfect! I am sooo excited, I am off to see if I can score these!...See MoreWhere to put this MCM clock?
Comments (14)I see where you’re going with the placement and noticed that too! It looks fine where you have it. I love all of the individual pieces you have under the console. It’s hard to look at our own spaces objectively sometimes. I posted on here once, but am not brave enough to do it again. I’m afraid everyone will say throw everything out and start over. Haha...See MoreUser
