Need help with exterior of home. What media goes well with stucco?
Hi everyone,
My wife and I are building a house in the next year or so (fingers crossed) and we could use some help with the exterior.
Due to budgetary constraints, we're planning for white stucco on 90% of the walls (back & sides), but we want to break up the front elevation with different media to tie in with the stucco. Board & batten, shake, etc. Brick would be pricey but I'm willing to consider it in small amounts. We're not really into stone, but maybe that's because we haven't seen any good examples on houses where we live.
(Is stucco + board & batten a strange combo or transition of materials? I don't see it a whole lot, at least not in the style we're aiming for.)
With the production floor plan that we chose, we want to get as close to that Modern Farmhouse look as possible. We're deciding between white or black windows (the latter being more expensive, correct?) Dark or black trims, fascia, and gutters are a possibility, although I'm not sure how those would handle the high desert sunshine and elements. Also, we could use some ideas for front & garage door colors, materials, and styles.
White will be the dominant exterior color, but we're open to different media and contrasting colors. We just want something with visual interest while also being easy on the eyes. But most importantly, it needs to be cohesive; we'll be living in this house for a long time!
(The interior will be nice and breezy: light oak laminate floors throughout, white walls & woodwork, quartz countertops, and cream cabinets.)

Comments (6)Thanks, for the ideas, Outside. Do a darker sage instead of black? Hmm yeah I could see that! The spouse was a little alarmed when I suggested black. :) Really, everything goes with the roof. It's quite neutral. The bricks aren't so neutral but not too bad as long as we don't do as the POs did and pick the ugliest one and match the paint to it. Yes, the cheap new windows installed by the PO are sort of cream colored vinyl clad (with 80s French blue trim--where's my goose in a bonnet?). In the back they are still simple aluminum framed. With blue trim. Comments (57)Love your house! I second to not remove the shutters as they balance out the narrowness of the windows. You have a big, solid looking house and without them the proportions of the windows seem to be a bit off. They also give a visual break to the expanse of walls unless you could add some wide trim around the windows. Your house has a commanding presence and I think it would look stunning in a darker color which would also stand out from all the other houses in your neighborhood. I also would take a sample of your flagstone and get it color matched when it is wet. Below is just an example. Comments (4)are you open to repainting the brick or does it have to stay yellow? If that's the natural color, fine (I thought it was already painted). perhaps a good power washing would help brighten it up a bit. I love the leaded windows off to the right. don't ever change those! normally the stucco portion is light and dark contrasting color goes on the wood trim&shutters. if you could do the brick in a dark gray, you could do something like this (except I'd pick a darker trim color.)...See MoreAdvice requested - Exterior paint for modern meditteranean stucco home
Comments (4)Thanks for the comments. goluscombe - You are right - it is something else for sure. Not really this, and not really that. It is a fully custom home in every respect, for better or worse, but it does have some Mediterranean influence I think - but it is surely modern/contemporary. Inside it is clean lines and similar to an art gallery with very large rooms and large walls suited for big pieces of art. Perhaps I should have titled my post differently but I didn't know what to say. We don't want to try and replicate the traditional Spanish style with red tiled roof look as that is not this house and it does have a dimensional asphalt shingle roof in a pewter color. To be fair, I really don't know what we are after but we do want a light color that will go with the dark bronze of the windows and look fresher and more up to date. The existing color is dull and just too "brown" for us. It looks dated and tired to us....See More
