DD2's MCM Master Bath - Before & After

DD2 purchased a 1950s MCM home last summer. It had a tiny master bath with the tiniest of showers. Her DH is easily 6'2" and the shower head hit him in the chest. Neither of them could put their elbows out to wash hair. Her DH said the previous owner was bigger, so we are not sure he even used this shower. During our viewing, we decided the shower could be made larger by stealing half the width from the hallway double closet, and raising the shower ceiling would not be a problem.

Luckily, I was right. Behind the short wall next to toilet was completely dead space, so no idea why they originally made shower so small, other than to save money. DD2 ordered the matte white shower tile and small matte black hex shower floor tile from Home Depot. The larger matte black hex floor tile for bathroom area and plumbing faucets were ordered from Wayfair.

I don't have an after photo of the wall niche, but it runs from one end to the other on the wall that is not seen. My grandson loves this shower so much he won't even use his bathtub shower. The bathroom feels so much larger now.

While the before vanity looks okay, it was falling apart and offered little storage.

She had the new vanity custom made since she could go a tad larger than ready-made vanities offered, and get the storage customized. Top drawer is also functional. While that experience was not a pleasant one, she is pleased with the outcome. Sink was ordered from Home Depot. Light fixture, West Elm. Faucet, Wayfair. It's a pretty brushed gold finish.

(She still needs to have the water connection changed to toilet.)

She still hasn't started on the children's bathroom remodel, but has floor tile, new toilet and has deep cleaned/scrubbed the wall tile grout. It also needs to be custom made since she is not doing a complete gut aka not going to tear off the wall tile that's on mortar bed. Nothing ready-made will work in the space. She was expecting when moving/remodeling, but hopes to do their bathroom this summer.

Thank you! Kitchen should start in a few weeks - assuming I have any $$ left after fixing all the damage to the pool from this storm! (in Texas where they cut power for 30 hours at my house when it was in the single digits...)

This came out great! The grey and white were good color choices for brighten up this area. Also the walk in shower is very popular with the bench seat in it. The lighting fixture is very nice as well and brings in a lot of good light.

what the Queen's people use LOL, they use maids I'd guess. Though I complain, I find something satisfying about polishing metals. And my cleaning person does not like to use really hard chemicals ... don't blame her since she is steeped in these products all day. I have been using this, and it works pretty well. Mothers' supposedly requires no "elbow grease" but that has not been my experience. Part of our issue is very very hard water (even though we have a veritable water treatment plant in the basement!). It has been an issue for all of our faucets and shower hardware, in 7BA... argggh. The guy who put the new wood counter in my BA cleaned the faucets for me when he removed the sink. I asked him how he got the spots off the hardware, and he told me took them home and his wife used Lysol Disinfectant Toilet Bowl Cleaner w/Lime/Rust Remover! He warned me not to leave it on too long. I just bought some. I will be sure to wear gloves, mask and ventilate!

Thank you! DD2 knew exactly what she wanted, but she always asks our opinions (me and DD1). She only got help from us once, when I was able to find the main floor tile.

One thing I did not mention - because she wanted the long, skinny shower tile, and they did not sell edge pieces, she used the same marble pencil trim she used in her last bathroom remodel (two houses ago - I swear she moves too often!). It also trims around the shower niche. For the shower threshold, we went to the fabricator I used on our recent remodel and found a piece of "scrap" marble for almost nothing. Basically she had to pay for the labor to cut it to size.

I love her choices and the result! My bathroom remodels are at a standstill and these photos have me even more restless to get on with it. I've been looking for a round mirror - that one looks perfect. The warm wood and white/black tiles. Perfect. Thanks for sharing Allison.

A winning design! I love to see transformations like this, so thanks for sharing. I never would have noticed the pencil tile in the pictures if you hadn't called it out. That was a creative solution.

Thank you, everyone! It feels so much bigger, just being able to see into the shower.

I "liked" posts earlier, and now they were all undone. I've noticed that on other threads as well. >:( I appreciate the comments.

That looks so good. I was squinting and counting the 4" tiles in the original shower and came to the conclusion it was 28" x 28" -- same as the one in my ca. 1954 master bath. Mine also has a frosted glass door, which completes the entombment vibe. I can't wait to redo the bathroom, and hope it turns out half as well as your DD's.

Thank you. 28" sq is tiny, Jakabedy. Theirs was 36" on the back wall. I looked back at photo and the shower wasn't photographed entirely. It is hard to take pics of a tiny room. LOL
