Can I grow this here, it says I can?????
Comments (5)Hi Carrie! I put a lily of the Nile in a large pot earlier this year. I used miracle gro potting soil and feed it with miracle gro. It is growing in the filtered shade of a mesquite. It was my first time with this beautiful plant and it is growing like crazy. It has put out repeated blooming stalks. The blue flowers are so pretty. I have been real pleased with mine so far and it is in the upper 90's now. I do not think full sun would be a good idea despite what the tag says. I am ready to plant more but will see how it goes in the summer heat. In the winter the pot received more sun and was ok with that. Good luck! Linda...See MoreCan You Grow Tea & Noisette Roses Here?
Comments (2)They are hardy, but some are supposed to want more warmth than others to be really happy. I'm trying some of the moschatas, had no dieback last winter, however I talked to Uncommon Rose and they said they do have some dieback. So far, among the Teas and Noisettes, I've seen no winter dieback to speak of. Marechal Neil looks good, and that one is supposed to be quite heat loving. I'm getting most of my roses from Vintage....See MoreWhat are some rose varieties I can grow in z3?
Comments (11)My friend (who's also in the Rose Society) had (she moved) a fabulous rose garden filled with peonies and old garden roses (OGRs) from before 1867. She had the most bees I've ever seen in a garden. Amazing! This will show you the size of the pots I use. I also have a routine for waking them up in the summer and putting them in the garage in the winter. I got my pots from Costco, but they don't sell this type anymore. They're resin pots and very light, but with the soil in (big yellow bag potting soil delivery) they become heavy and my husband uses a dolly to get them to and from the garage. I usually have around 50 roses in pots. Yes, John Davis is capable of climbing...but it's canes aren't long and supple, so it was beyond me (maybe not you) to get it to climb. :) Ann - That sounds wonderful!! And bees love rugosa roses the best!! Carol...See MoreWhat kind of hydrangeas can I grow here?
Comments (8)My only concern with hydrangeas in that location would be the downspout helping keep things too soggy at times. I would not plant oakleaf and paniculata hydrangeas there but smooth (arborescens) and macrophyllas (mopheads and lacecaps) might be ok if the soil is not soggy for long periods of time. Not sure how much sun they will get there but macs will do better than smooth hydrangea in less sun. Clethra looks fine but watch the width as it may encroach into the neighbor's property. I saw Ruby Spice and Vanilla Spice as a sort of hedge once and they looked nice. If not a good location, try ferns and mosses. There is a forum you can ck: Moss, Ferns & Cryptogams....See MoreLilyfinch z9a Murrieta Ca
