Comments (8)Simplifying with larger, bolder elements would help the landscape read from a distance. The beds around the trees seem to honor the ancient Chinese practice of foot binding, being too small for those large trees. Enlarge to be a more correlative proportion. Try to make the trees be more in the center, which means that the circle bed at the left side is a "D" shape, on account of the drive passing nearby. The lone circle bed at the center would be squeezed out, which is a good thing. Of the dated characteristics, it seems like a brooch pinned on the lawn. What the picture needs instead is a clearer path to the front entrance of the home. It should be visible from the street. Making the path too it more visible would be a big plus, too. Definitely, the shrubs flanking the walk should be done away with. They not only obscure the entrance but "say" it probably requires a special badge or password in order to enter. The jail bars say it's going to be hard to get in ... maybe hard to get out, too. I think they would be less visible if a darker color. Large patches of seasonal color flanking the entrance (not in front of it) would add some cheer and an inviting quality to the front entrance. With such low windows, beds of perennials or groundcover would be a better, low maintenance choice. The shrubs get too tall. They might be better flanking the windows instead of underscoring them. The house would look more well connected to the surroundings if it had small trees, with groundcover below, off of its front corners. Repair the lawn where it is scarred. It will make a big difference to the overall picture to get the grass in good condition. If it were ever a possibility, a porch roof would be a major upgrade to the whole house....See More90s house needs a facelift!
Comments (7)Very nice home! I would dig out all your current landscaping and get new. It currently looks over grown/old. New landscaping would make a big difference. Do you put flowers out in the Summer or decorate for Fall (mums, pumpkins)? That would give you some color too and add interest. I would also replace the garage lights with something larger. On your curved brick porch entrance cover, the two beige squares on each side, are those decorative or can you put lights there? I would also paint the side light(s) of the door the same green as your front door. (It looks like they are beige). See how that looks and then go from there. My DH would love the width of your driveway! Let us know what you decide to do....See MoreLooking for advice before I give my home a facelift
Comments (24)Just my opinion.... would definitely get windows with actual panes, but if you can swing it cost-wise you should get the simulated divided lights. not the press-on or only-between-the-glass lights. Check out a window company website for examples. It will give definition to your windows and get rid of the builder basic look. Keep the shutters. New front door, as previous poster said, shoot for something classic and less busy. Sasha dog gave some great ideas. I agree, avoid any stark white in trim and windows. We have the cashmere color from Marvin, maybe look at that. I would keep shutters the same color or similar and maybe look at more dramatic color or front door, if that's what you want. Low commitment if your taste changes. Basically, windows and doors are an area where going low-end is reflected in the look. Fine if that's your budget, but sounds like you are interested in really upgrading the look. (As well as function). Start researching window companies and look at their mid- or high- range options. I really don't think you'd be happy with inexpensive, basic vinyl windows....See MoreNeed ideas to give front of house a facelift!
Comments (9)I agree that this is a landscaping issue, but would also suggest that the railing around the porch roof is not a positive feature, especially since it is obvious there is no access through that window. I would remove the railing detail. I would also remove the shutters from the double window upstairs on the right. Pop your front door with brass hardware and a brass kickplate. I don't see any lights on your porch. Can you remedy that? Replace the tan urns with larger ones in black or charcoal that stand on a foot like shown above but much larger. Fill with a bonsai twist evergreen covered with some tiny battery operated lights. For the season, surround the base of the urns with low pots of red poinsettias. IMO, your white trim is just a bit too bright and contrasting, but you can always change that next time you paint....See MoreNorwood Architects
