Where do you put your kids art/school supplies?
Comments (8)drawers. I like drawers for this sort of stuff. easier to get out, easier to sort, easier to store. Open draaer, stash stuff, close drawer. Get those Sterilite 3-drawer sets (or an Iris-brand cart w/ the shallow drawers, if you want), and put in dividers. iris makes a nice one for this that I use in my Sunday School classroom--it has two shallow drawers on top and a deeper on one the bottom; I got it at Office Depot. I put the scissors, glue sticks, etc., in the upper drawers, and the paint and playdough in the bottom deep drawer. I used those "score and snap" drawer dividers from the Container Store (actually got mine at Target, though) to divide the drawers so stuff doesn't slide around everywhere. At home I have those little drawer organizing containers from Rubbermaid, which work almost as well, but not quite. For markers, the secret is to have a drawer that's EXACTLY as wide (well, OK, an extra inch is OK, but NO MORE) as the marker is TALL. Then, the markers can't end up at an angle. I was lucky to find a little skinny 3-drawer set exactly wide enough, but I can't find them anymore. Though maybe the small Sterilite ones would work. And Rubbermaid makes a small one--not sure if it's skinny around side-to-side If all else fails, put some sort of divider inside a larger drawer, to keep the markers from sliding end-to-end, and ending up tipped at an angle. I just cut cardboard into strips and taped in place w/ packing tape in one of my drawers. I do find that I keep too much. Right now I've used drawers and other containers to fill a shelf intheir room, but most of it just never gets used. I need to weed out. I have actually thrown away, in the past, and entire shoebox full of crayons. Here is a link that might be useful: Sterilite's three-drawer chests--other companies make similar ones...See Morehow much real estate do your kids own in your home?
Comments (24)Fun, did you have more than one living space growing up? We had a formal living room and a family room so the family room is where our toys were kept. However, we didn't have nearly the same amount of toys as kids do nowadays! The way our family room was laid out, there was a corner where all the toys were kept. I shared an average size room with my sister, so we didn't have much room for playing in there. I'm sure we did a bit but for the most part, we were in the family room when we were young or outside. I also can't imagine having kids' toys in every room. That would drive me nuts! Most of the houses around here have basements or more than one living area so the basements store the bulk of the toys and then the family room, which is typically open to or next to the kitchen is where the main floor toys are stashed. Having four kids has relaxed my anal tendencies but I still go a little nuts with crap laying around. The peninsula in my kitchen becomes the drop zone but I can't stand having that clutter. And dh is the worst b/c he will leave his stuff there and never come back for it but then get annoyed if I move it or ask him to. He's used to clutter from his childhood. I used to have complete order in the house b/f I went to bed, but now I'm so exhausted by then that I have slacked off a bit and then get all stressed when I come downstairs the next morning to clutter and have to clean up b/f I can function. I'm like that with cooking too - I can't start cooking unless the counters are clear, no dirty dishes out, etc. DH looks at me like I have two heads. Am I the only weird one like that? Oops, sorry, I have a habit off going off on a tangent!...See MoreDo/did your kids use a swing set?
Comments (33)I wonder how many of those who reported heavy use of their swing sets are in the ....ah.....'older' crowd? We used ours all the time when we were growing up in the 50's and 60's but we were also outside all the time - playing all those kids games that no one seems to play now. Anyone remember Hide and Seek, Red Light, Green Light, Stop - Mother May I, Hop Scotch, Red Rover, Hula Hoops, roller skates (with keys), jump rope,........... Families tended to be larger and TV didn't dominate our lives. We played basketball, rode bikes and played Peter Pan in the woods. If we were inside we played board games, cards or pulled our our coloring books. With all those wonderful memories of our own childhood DH built an oversize swing set for our kids using double 2x12s for the overhead ladder and supports. It was fairly simple - 2 swings, a rope swing, a ladder on both sides and across the top, and a huge tarp to turn it into a fort or cave or den or tent. . Our kids used it - and so did the neighbor kids since it was nice and large, plus we had a sandbox and a tree that was easy to climb. We limited TV and it probably also helped that this was before everyone was connected to the internet 24/7. My kids are in their 30's so I never had to deal with kids walking around with iPads. We bought a computer when they were in grad school - it was an Apple 1C or 1E - and they liked playing Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego or the Oregon Trail. Now we have 2 new families near us with beautiful wooden swing sets with climbing boards and tents and they were used while the kids were preschool, but now are seldom used unless they have a play date. Around here kids don't roam the neighborhood the way I did or as my own kids did in the 80's. Maire...See MoreDid your kids (or you???) grow up watching this house?
Comments (10)Growing up we had that exact same intercom system in our house. I would turn it off in my room so my mother could not eavesdrop. It took so long to warm up you could just yell up the stairs ten times. i had no idea the Bradys had such a big yard. ;) No wonder Marcia got bonked in the nose with a football. i still refer to stairs that have no risers as. Brady Bunch stairs. thanks for sharing. That was fun...See Morekatythompson
