In addition to what forgotten said about leaks from the washer, I would definitley consider how you use the room. I like to be able to put wet towels, snow clothes etc. down on the laundry room floor (but mine is by our garage entrance). If no one is going to throw anything wet and dirty down on the floor, then it should be okay.

Hi, We always install a layer of cement sheet which we glue and screw to the hardwood, then apply paintable waterproofing over that. you can then simply tile as normal and the movement differential is allowed for. if height is an issue we remove the timber and replace it with a cement sheet thick enough to be a structural base. cherrs

@Kristel Quintana - if your joists are too warped for tile, they are probably too warped for vinyl planks. If this is the case, I would recommend sheet vinyl instead. And NO sheet vinyl does NOT have to be the ugly sort. There are some stunning visuals in sheet vinyl that do NOT look like wood. In fact, you can get some STUNNING slate look floors that would look amazing next to the bamboo and the cabinets. Please, please, please assess your "flatness" quotient for the vinyl planks. Double and triple check your floor. The best way to do that = remove the existing vinyl. The existing embosed sheet vinyl needs to come out anyway....you might as well do it to see what your subfloor flatness rating sits at. Flooret is like all other planked vinyl....it needs SUPER FLAT ("perfect" comes to mind). If you realize your existing subfloor isn't going to cut it, I HIGHLY recommend looking at a sheet product to keep your preparation costs down. In other words, replace "like with like".

I went through a period of time where I thought I didn't like sheet vinyl. Now, as I've gotten older and wiser, I'm really coming back around to it. I have tile in several areas and I will not personally ever install it in any house of mine again. It's so stinking hard to stand on, and it's a major PITA to rip up when you want to change it out again down the road. I currently have tile I have come to hate in a bathroom because I just can't work up the effort to chip it out and re-level up the floor so we can put down something else. Tile has become my version of wall paper. It's one of those things that sounds good at the time - but it's more hard to get out of than a bad marriage when you've finally had enough of it.
