Cabinetry around regular refrigerator
Comments (23)On a slightly different tack regarding regular refrigerators and cabinetry, we have a 30-inch one that we were forced to buy in an emergency last year. It's just fine for our needs, so we're not replacing it in new kitchen. I am assuming we will replace it once at least before I have to leave the kitchen, so we've decided not to build a surround for it. What options do you use for suitable pieces at the refrig., esp. above the unit? open shelving, perhaps? Could this be used for a refrig that has heat accumulating at top?...See MoreAppliance color choice for new home Stainless or Oiled Bronze?
Comments (21)In person, the ORB is a pretty yucky look. It looks like someone (badly) painted a tinted clearcoat over stainless. It smacked of "shadetree DIY painting" to me, as in, "Hey, lets see if we can paint a refrigerator that there oil rubbed bronze!" And I wouldn't take a JennAir appliance if you were to give it to me. They've had major issues with poor design and repairs, and since Whirpool acquired the brand 3 years ago, it's been the redheaded stepchild of the Maytag/Whirlpool consolidation. They just ddidn't know what to do with it. Now, they're trying to position Jennair as being above KitchenAid in quality and more "exclusive"---but they're gonna let Sears of all places carry it. Schizoid marketing. And, the thing is, the Jennair branded merchandise comes off the same assembly line as the Maytag or Amana, or even Magic Chef, and underneath that pricy logo, it really isn't any different than one of the Magic Chef's. But, the logo has a premium, and that premium is so not worth it....See MoreAlternatives to stainless???
Comments (12)In an effort to satisfy the needs of consumers who opt to get the look of stainless steel in a more affordable way as well as to provide them with easier to care for appliances and/or a slight aesthetic difference, manufacturers have made other types of finishes available. These finishes include clean steel, satina, stainless platinum, titanium, and silver satin. For example: Clean steel, made from carbon steel, doesnÂt hold fingerprints and smudges and is easy to clean with a window cleaner or a mild detergent. It also holds magnets. ItÂs very hard to notice the difference in the appearance of clean steel vs. stainless steel surfaces. Satina, a finish of coated aluminum, provides the look of stainless steel, repels body oils, resists fingerprints and smudges and can be cleaned with household window cleaners quite easily. Titanium offers a bit of a deeper color that allows for a richer look than stainless steel. Stainless platinum is a bit brighter silver than the stainless. Silver satin gives an elegant, low glare look to appliances. Before you shop, look at the different finishes and then decide which one is best suited to your needs and budget....See Morestainless steel vs. stainless look a like
Comments (11)I agonized over this when we did our kitchen 3 yrs ago, and again this past winter when we finally updated the refrigerator. (We had kept the glaring white one when we remodeled because it was only 3 yrs old at the time.) I ended up going with everything stainless. I have 2 kids (6 yrs old & 11 yrs old) and a messy husband. The hardest appliance to keep looking good is the dishwasher. It is just touched/handled so many times and stuff just drips. I was surprised with the stainless refrig (with water & ice to the door) that it stays looking pretty good. I had a "training session" for everyone when it arrived and we all try to use the handles. Nonetheless, about once every 2 - 3 weeks, I end up using a SS spray and wiping everything clean. (I drape old towels over the adjacent cabinets and on the floor because of overspray.) In between times, I can usually lessen smudges by a slightly damp miracle cloth. So, if I had to do it again, I would definitely keep the SS stove and range because of the "restaurant look" from a design standpoint. I would try to do a cabinet-covered dishwasher and refrigerator though. Good luck. (BTW, since I already had all the other appliances in place when I shopped for the new refrig, I didn't go with a ss look-alike because I didn't think it would match closely enough to the stainless that I already had.) --DJ...See More
