Furniture Design Dilemma

should I buy the house or is family room too awkward

I loved be everything about this house and the neighborhood but the asymmetrical family room. Should I not buy this or can the awkwardness be balanced w furniture and rugs. Any suggestions on how to lay it out. The fireplace is about 6 foot long it is centered to the kitchen island. The larger shelf unit is about six and a half feet. The smaller shelf unit is about 2 feet. Thanksgiving!,,

Or remove the shelves on the right and put the TV there.

The fireplace appears to be centered on the wall. I don't see a problem.

I do not see a problem either. But you have to be happy with it. If it’s going to bother you everyday, don’t do it. You can’t change it. Things about how you would put furniture in the room and problem solve before you decide. Good luck!

Joanieponie here is a picture of the barn doors and track. They are mounted on the family room side. Someone suggested I could mount art to the doors and I think that's a very interesting idea that could look really great! Seems like everyone feels it makes most sense to keep the current entry and add a second one to the hallway. I'm on board with that and think it's the best option too. I sure am glad I received so many opinions because I was so tempted to close up the wall entirely and I probably would have been kicking myself later. I better call the GC first thing in the morning to let him know he doesn't need to bring drywall - just his hammer to bust out a second opening. He'll be thrilled since he thought I was off my rocker wanting to already Reno our new house he just built! Thanks everyone!

Our last house needed everything. The roof was four layers thick with the last one put on over thirty years before we bought the house. It still had knob and tube wiring. It had zero functioning appliances—even the heat did not work. One of the two bathrooms had a leaking shower. And on and on. But it was the perfect location (great schools in walking distance, walk to library, walk to movies, walk to shops and restaurants, easy access to commute routes, adorable neighborhood). It was the right size and had the best curb appeal ever. And there was very very very little on the market. We spent three years and a lot of effort and money fixing everything. And then about a year after finishing our last project, we moved. Sigh. Our housing market was hot so we sold for enough to cover the money we put in plus more, but that’s not quite the same as getting our money back because I am sure we could have done nothing and still sold for more than we paid. So if you hate remodelling ( I actually like the planning part quite a bit, but not the living in the under construction house with kids part at all), I would think carefully about taking on a huge project.

The question to answer first is where will the TV be positioned. Then the layout must work with that given.

If you love the house and location, you may be sorry you didn’t purchase. An interior designer could easily solve any concerns you have with this lovely, large room.

I don't see the weirdness I guess. If you have other pictures/floor plan etc, I'm sure someone could toss out an idea or two regarding placement of furniture. If I loved everything else about a house, I don't know that I could pass it up...not many "perfect" houses out and about.

Your seating should be centered on the fireplace with enough space so it doesn't block the door to the left.

If this is the only negative, buy the house.

I think that if you painted the bit of wall on the right, that is under the overhang, as well as the farthest right cupboard doors (and wall and shelves just above) a different color (to disconnect it from the rest of the fireplace wall) you will see the room as more balanced - creating an optical illusion that can be aided by the way you use the shelves, and placement of furniture.

I agree with susan about the tv. DH and I bought a new house last year with a very large family room and a very large fireplace. He was astounded to learn that our tv would NOT go over the fireplace. I think maybe it's a guy thing.

"I loved be everything about this house and the neighborhood..." in my opinion, location tops everything. if you love everything (else) about the house and the neighborhood, then I say go for it. it's not realistic to expect to get 100% of everything you want. besides, your family room is gorgeous and any decent designer can help you figure out a good furniture layout.

You could remove the shelves on the right side to create a tv niche. Then the shelves on the left won’t appear to be trying to match anything.

This is a gorgeous room. Buy the house and we'll help you figure it out. Short answer: symmetry is not important; balance is. There are plenty of ways to arrange a great balanced living space here.
