Barr: 'Troubling' evidence in Review of Russia's role in 2016 election

dublinbay z6 (KS)

The Trump administration is lining up to take shots at any federal prosecutor who cast any shadow of suspicion on the the role of the Trump campaign in the Russian election interference case.

Isn't it nice that Trump has his own personal legal bulldog in charge of the AG investigation!

-----------------------------

"Attorney General William Barr signaled that federal officials involved in launching the investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 election and its links to the Trump campaign could face criminal prosecution.

As part of a wide-ranging interview with Fox News, the attorney general said a federal prosecutor appointed to review the origins of the inquiry, later headed by Justice Department special counsel Robert Mueller, has so far found “troubling” evidence of possible abuses.

“My own view is that the evidence shows that we’re not dealing with just the mistakes or sloppiness,” Barr said Thursday. “There was something far more troubling here. We’re going to get to the bottom of it. And if people broke the law and we can establish that with the evidence, they will be prosecuted.”

The attorney general's remarks represent the most extensive public assessment yet of Connecticut U.S. Attorney John Durham’s work since his appointment last year.

Durham, a mob-busting federal prosecutor for more than three decades, has been assisting the attorney general to determine whether federal investigators acted appropriately in the early stages of the now-completed inquiry into Russia's interference campaign. Barr announced the review after expressing concerns about the FBI's use of surveillance.

"Spying on a campaign is a big deal," Barr told lawmakers last year. "I think spying did occur. The question is whether it was adequately predicated."

President Donald Trump, who has voiced enthusiastic support for Durham's inquiry, has long denounced the Russia investigation as a "witch-hunt." Mueller's two-year investigation resulted in the conviction of a half-dozen former Trump aides.

[. . .]

While the attorney general asserted that investigators had no "basis" to launch the investigation into the Trump campaign, the Justice Department's inspector general concluded last year that the FBI was legally justified in launching its inquiry. "

How long will this drag out? Hopefully not past Trump's departure from the WH after the 2020 election.

The beginning of the end comes on November 3, 2020. FIring Trump will result in the firing of Barr and the end of these investigations to the extent the new AG determines there is no substance to them.

A lot of people need to go to prison over that garbage. What would happen if Barr was fired during an investigation? Sound familiar?

It warms my heart that GOP governors in some states are getting very high marks from Dem voters on the way this health crisis is being managed. And that isn't the case for Trump. Even his supporters are giving him 50% for his decisions.

Back to topic - the DOJ is going after those who aren't giving Trump a pass on everything. They release press releases saying all the mistakes made when trying to frame Trump. But when the actual reports are examined, it's found the mistakes were often not material.

Barr is just trying to blow some hot air into his leaky trump balloon. Wasn't this earth shattering investigation pushed back from Dec until April, like now? He'll squeeze this invisible turnip for blood as long as he likes, or as trump likes, past Nov.

Not what we're witnessing, Kate.

AG Barr askedUS Attorney John Durham to investigate how the Russia Probe began. By investigating the investigators, Mr. Durham's team can ensure that everyone who participated or contributed to the Russia Probe gets to tell his or her own story. Everyone offering information in conflict with their own previous testimony or that of others can help resolve those conflicts. Memories can be corrected, if necessary.

It's all good. I am grateful to Mr. Barr and Mr. Durham and their teams, for their efforts to clarify what was done, and what was done that should not have been done.

Yes, Barr had to step in because Durham was taking a long time and finding nothing.

Everyone offering information in conflict with their own previous testimony or that of others can be resolved. Memories can be corrected, if necessary."

A large number of Americans do not accept such a benign and impartial interpretation of Barr's activities.

Here is an earlier reading by NPR--a very neutral and balanced source:

---------------------------------------------------

"Democrats Say White House Is Interfering As Russia Review Becomes A Criminal Case

The Justice Department's review of the origins of the Russia probe has become a criminal investigation, a source familiar with the matter confirmed to NPR.

It is unclear what prompted the shift from an administrative review to a formal criminal investigation, when the change took place or what potential crime is under investigation.

The change drew immediate criticism from Democrats, who have accused Attorney General William Barr of turning the Justice Department into a political weapon for President Trump.

"These reports, if true, raise profound new concerns that the Department of Justice under Attorney General William Barr has lost its independence and become a vehicle for President Trump's political revenge," said the Democratic chairmen of the House Judiciary and Intelligence committees, Reps. Jerry Nadler of New York and Adam Schiff of California.

[. . .]

Barr told Congress earlier this year that he wants to understand how and why investigators made the decisions they did in 2016, when the FBI began to investigate what it later verified was a broad campaign of "active measures" by Russia targeting the U.S. presidential election.

Former special counsel Robert Mueller later documented that interference in hundreds of pages of court documents and in his final report. Thirty-four individuals, including 25 Russian nationals, as well as three Russian entities, were indicted in the investigation.

[. . .]

Barr, however, concluded that the evidence did not establish that the president obstructed justice.

[. . .]

. . . the escalation of Durham's inquiry into a criminal case is politically important to Republicans, who call the Russia investigation the work of "biased" conspirators within a "deep state" who abused their powers out of political animus toward Trump and his campaign."

----------------------------------

Instead of high-minded virtue, the motivation on both sides seems to be more like partisan payback (criminally prosecute those FBI officials who dared to investigate Trump's ties with the Russians in the 2016 election).

The questions raised in the OP still remain, however.

I'm betting on convictions.

We haven't forgotten, Trump was not supposed to be elected.

SUNSHINE will expose this craven, depraved and illegal scheme and it's self righteous, criminal players.

"SUNSHINE will expose this ..."

How about calling for sunshine on the early WH meetings vis a vis Covid-19?

Barr is trying to counteract the horrible job the Trump has done on COVID by trotting out the investigation again. So does this mean that RUssia will not be interfering in the 2020 election? Or is it code to Russia to get started? .

Good point, JZG. I had not considered why Barr is publicizing the investigation again. Of course, to distract us from focusing on Trump's poor handling of the coronavirus crisis. Of course!

Understood. We have all formed opinions based upon what we know, or what we think we know. We don't yet know the basis for this investigation leading to a criminal probe. It would appear there is evidence of wrongdoing, and that charges could be brought.

Mr. Durham is highly regarded, and has over 30 years of public service. I don't expect his investigation to be riddled with the sloppiness and dishonesty for which the FBI, and elements of our most powerful institutions have yet to be held accountable.

"everyone who participated or contributed to the Russia Probe gets to tell his or her own story."

So, like the impeachment hearings, then, when everyone who had evidence to provide, like actual witnesses and actual documents, were happily given time to appear and have their evidence taken into account? You mean just like then? Oh, wait.................

If Barr and Durham use the same standard of proof that the crats used in the impeachment...Oh my! People are going to prison for a long time. Any made up fantasy will work for proof.

There are over 100 threads about this so-called Durham investigation, the last one posted back in Dec with high hopes of a Spring round-up of the "bad guys" who were out to get trump. It's been almost a year now, Barr and his toadies are dragging it out as pablum to feed the trumpsters appetite for revenge since Horowitz got nothing last fall. Wake Up!

If there is nothing to it then it will be released after the election. If there is very little to it like Horowitz found then it will be released just before the election with super sensationalized headlines via RW media and a lot of trump bragging about the failed "coup". If they had an ounce of any wrongdoing found by now it would be leaked out as a distraction for our present clustersuck, you can bet on it. The same reason Barr is bringing it up now but without any meat to offer.

Me too. Durham's release has been expected to be spring for a long time. We're less than one month into spring, so I'd expect we'll likely see it sometime in the next 2 months.

Not like that at all. The impeachment farce was a political process, not a legal process comparable to a court trial.

Investigating the investigators is a legal process under which the accused have rights. Adam Schiff and Jerrold Nadler won't be the arbiters of who gets to speak and who doesn't. Finding the "genesis" of the Russia Probe has become a criminal investigation, which means if charges are brought, they will be accompanied by actual evidence. The accused will not be at the mercy of Democrat politicians.

Stay tuned. Be prepared to hear things you don't want to hear, but can no longer deny.

Americans were spied upon. Powerful officials lied to the FISA Court. People inside and outside our government schemed to ensure the Democrat candidate would "win" the presidency. When that didn't work, they schemed to have President Trump impeached and removed. With the help of a corrupt MSM, they persuaded Americans to believe their president was a Russian asset.
