Craft/sewing books for almost 12 yo girl
Comments (17)Hi Sue -I'm so excited about your daughter! I was a lot like that as a kid, and it has remained a lifelong interest of mine. I had a couple of additional thoughts. There are lots of hip sewing blogs today, and many of them have projects all the time. I've linked to one I like, and from there, she can link to many more. Modernseamster.com is another good starting point. Another thought I had is to wonder if she might want to participate in an organization I have been working with for awhile. It's called Dress-a-Girl-Around-the-World. There are chapters all over the country, though there doesn't have to be one there locally for her to join in the fun. We make very simple "pillowcase" dresses for girls all over the world. The organization works on the premise of people donating supplies, so it wouldn't be money out of her pocket. Just her time and talents. My daughter has made many, and received an email photo showing a little girl wearing the very first dress my daughter made. Here's a link to get her started if she is interested: http://www.dressagirlaroundtheworld.com...See MoreNo New Craft Ideas
Comments (33)Flamey...I SO agree with all you posted and although I have never been to 'Etsy'..I'm headed there to see what's up. I also agree w/Susanjf as to the fact-perhaps with the state our country is in-job losses, etc..may be we'll all strap in & start making more useful gifts & quit spending $$ at the stores for gifting. I, like the 'pink bird'...tend to craft towards useful home dec things vs.."dust catchers"..more to my liking. So many of the big, annual craft shows here in FL are basically 'the same old things-just more of them'-to the point I quit attending them. About 7 yrs ago-I held annual Xmas craft parties here in my home, for the gals in my park...women who NEVER even crafted nor thought they could-are gung ho now..many even bought glue guns! LOL! Methinks all some folks need is to be shown how to do one craft & it may spur their creative juices to spread their imagination into bigger & different creative ideas. I really wish the tv networks would increase crafting shows....See MoreThose of you who sew,
Comments (17)My favorite place to buy cotton fabric is a local quilt shop as they will generally have a better grade of fabric than Hancock's or WalMart. (Our WM's don't have fabric anymore or much of anything really, craft-wise, too bad.) I do like to be able to feel the fabric before I buy it as sometimes the thread count is inferior for mixing with other fabrics. There are 2 quilt shops in my area, a couple of other places that have Hawaiian fabrics and other "oddities" and I buy a lot of fabric when I'm in FL at Rainbow's End QS in Dunedin. They have about 18,000 bolts of cotton, it's a blast to go in there! I buy a lot online, too- Etsy has a large selection if you search under supplies and Ebay has a lot. I go to quiltshops.com to search for specific fabrics when I'm on the hunt for a certain piece, that's a wonderful way to find more of what you need. I WISH there was a JoAnn's nearby as they carry some great fabric lines that no one else does, but I can order online. Hobby Lobby has basic fabrics but nothing special anymore- ours have cut their fabric dept by at least half, it's kind of pathetic but I can get some good solids and accessories there, like quilting supplies, zippers, etc. Hancocks is still the best for zippers, though. I have to drive an hour to one of those. 35 minutes for anything else. Online shopping saves me time and gas....See MoreLooking for Inspiration for Craft/Sewing/Art Room
Comments (9)I'm usually over on the building a home forum and stopped by to see all the pretties. I'm so glad I did! I'm getting my very own "play room" at the new house and desperately need some inspiration. :o) I already packed up most of the current sewing room, so it looks a little bare in here. Please ignore the packing boxes stashed under the table and the chairs. Sorry! The shelves above the table are two brackets with a regular shelf on top. I put the little plastic pieces for curtain rods inside and inserted a wooden dowel. These have worked great for hanging the fabrics and trims for upcoming projects. The shelves on top make nice spaces for displaying goodies...which I have already packed. LOL Under the table there are usually clear rolling totes with 3 drawers each. I keep my things for handwork in them. They are great for taking in the other room so I can watch TV while stitching. :o) The cutting table folds and is tucked out of the way against the wall. On the opposite wall there is a bank of cabinets for keeping fabrics and trims. The framed fabric above the shelf was great for to-do lists and notes on projects....See MoreOakley
