Senate Democrats blocked relief for tens of millions of Americans

Senate Democrats blocked much-needed relief for tens of millions of Americans … AGAIN!

Remember when they did this last time over giving the Kennedy Center a bunch of money who then turned around and laid their musicians off anyway?

Yeah, the Democrats are at it again.

Leader McConnell✔@senatemajldrSenate Democrats just blocked urgent money for a popular, bipartisan job-saving program which they themselves literally coauthored with us two weeks ago. I complimented both sides and asked to increase the dollar amount without changing anything else. But they blocked it. https://twitter.com/LauraLitvan/status/1248258240154087424 …

We just found out that 16 million Americans have been laid off in three weeks. A staggering 10% of the labor force is now out of work. This is a crisis. No time for partisan maneuvering or politics as usual. I hope Democrats reverse course & let us increase paycheck support soon.

Take the gloves off, Skull King!

November is going to be a blood bath for Democrats, who are fiddling with voters' livelihoods and their ability to survive.

No doubt the other side of the story will come to light any time now.

When Pelosi and Schumer come out of their bunker with a narrative that doesn't look like it's their fault that much-needed relief is being denied because they want to shoehorn in their agenda.

found this:

" Democrats do not object to the increase in funding, but they are calling
for half of the new money to be targeted to "community-based financial
institutions" which they say help businesses owned by minorities,
veterans and rural Americans across the country.......Democrats offered an amendment to add $100 billion for hospitals and
$150 billion for state and local government in addition to the
small-business spending, along with the restrictions. Republicans
blocked that effort."

As usual its my way or the highway for McConnell.

In other words the people who need the money won't be getting it unless the democrats fight for them.

McConnell is playing his political game. Dems are trying to insure this is not more money going to the wealthy instead of workers and disadvantaged.

Because the GOP wrote a bill that is basically imbalanced.

Gee, imagine that. There was another side of the story. Again, compromise is the answer.

Does McConnell (and HT posters) not think we're going to check for accuracy? How foolish of him to go right to Twitter with his RW spin.

Senator Amy McGrath sure has a nice ring to it.

From CNBC:

"Senate Democrats on Thursday blocked a Republican push to unanimously pass a bill to put $250 billion more into a loan program for small businesses devastated by the coronavirus pandemic.

With only a few senators in the Capitol, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell tried to approve the measure by a unanimous vote. Sen. Ben Cardin, D-Md., objected to the request, stalling the legislation.

Speaking on the Senate floor, McConnell said he was not “talking about changing any policy language” the parties negotiated last month as part of an unprecedented $2 trillion emergency spending package. He urged Democrats not to “block emergency aid you do not even oppose just because you want something more” — tweaks to the small business aid program and more emergency funding for hospitals and states, a proposal Democratic leaders outlined Wednesday."

They don’t care about holding Americans hostages and every delay is potentially businesses that go under and more jobs that are lost.

So exactly what leverage will they have to get this necessary money to small businesses and hospitals if they don't get it in now? McConnell would block this in a heart beat if he wanted something more.

Yes, Senator Amy McGrath sounds really good!

Let's see now--what were the Democratic proposals that McConnell and other Senate Repubs. turned down, thus blocking "much-needed relief for tens of millions of Americans"?

  • Make sure some of that money was available to "businesses owned by minorities, veterans and rural Americans"
  • "Add $100 billion for hospitals and $150 billion for state and local government in addition to the small-business spending."

Oh, instead of all the money in one general pot that Trump could raid for his Wall or whatever at will, Democrats wanted it to be specified that certain groups be guaranteed a percentage of the money pot. Well, shame on those Democrats wanting to make sure that the money did not go mainly to the rich and privileged--and Trumps' buddies.

Bingo, Rubio!!

Marco Rubio@marcorubio

This is simple. They blocked money for #PPP because unfortunately Senate democratic leaders view every request as a chance to get something they want in return.

But help to #SmallBusiness is not a GOP “ask”. It’s something everyone supports.

This is no time for partisan games. https://twitter.com/lauralitvan/status/1248267378158419971 …

Here's the evil underbelly of the Democrats' latest stunt; It's not that they disagree with what's in the bill-- it's that there's not enough in it FOR THEM.

So if they don't get what's in it for them, nobody gets anything.

Democrats would rather Americans stay on welfare than have the dignity of a job.

So while the GOP hasn't distributed the original money, they're whining about the next round of money they won't distribute!

If you listen to the State Governors they are saying that the steps that they have had to take to deal with the disease has emptied their coffers and that the money needed for education, emergency services etc is gone. They are appealing to the federal government for financial relief.

Would Republicans rather have that money come out of the federal relief bill or would they rather see their State taxes soar? I guess the other option is to close all public schools as well as municipal and State services....maybe cut emergency services in half.....

I heard reported that Trump was really ticked that the government cheques would largely be by direct deposit. He wanted paper cheques with his signature on them. Maybe Mnuchin will figure a way.

Pretty hard to have the dignity of a job when you're not supposed to leave your home and all local businesses have closed.

Nice try, but all those dumb rightist tropes simply do not apply any more.

And as always, McConnell uses every opportunity to smear Democrats, obscure the truth and control the media narrative with his BS. That man apparently traded his soul for power.

McConnell is so very concerned about helping Americans weather the pandemic that he has adjourned the senate until Monday.

Where is this money coming from? Really, how is all of this free money going to impact us a year from now.

I really resent that those not impacted are getting checks and other benefits. I would prefer that the government be focused on fixing the current issues with the unemployment system to help those that need it instead of just handing out more cash.
