Any Ideas On How to Use Berry Plants Decoratively in Landscape?
Comments (1)just you: Whether or nor berry plants can be attractive as landscape specimens is pretty much in the eye of the beholder. And their beauty would be largely dependent on how well they were pruned, trained, and cared for. Most berry plants are not plant and forget specimens. In addition, all of the caneberry varieties, blackberries and raspberries included, are perennials that must be renewed and the old canes removed every season to maintain a presentable appearance. A possible exception is a planting of highbush blueberries, whose canes have more permanence and do not require much in the way of external support or training. Then there are the members of the currant and gooseberry family, as well as bush type cherries. There are other possibilities, but most require an individual judgment as to beauty. There will be no shortage of ideas if you begin to think about it. I have what could be called an "espalier" of Triple Crown blackberry plants that are very productive, but a non-French person might just call it a trellis. Comments (41)I haven't been on the forums for a while so am a bit out of touch. I've been busy in the garden, but it is already 90F at 9am so am taking it in small doses today. I got carried away with purchasing and trading morning glory seeds this past winter and ended up like many of you with not enough fence lines to grow them on. I raise sheep and if they can get to a plant it is history! I made some trellises this year with refrigeration tubing rolled into a shape like a spring (about 6" in diameter) then inserted one end of the spring in the ground or pot and the other end in a section of copper pipe stood on end in the soil with the plants around it. The plants seem happy enough with this arrangement but it is actually a little short for most morning glories and they are overreaching the tops now looking for additional support from neighboring plants. Another idea that I tried this year is actually working better--I had a section of loose chain link fence that I could get anyone to take away for me so I used a bolt cutter to cut off the part where the wires are twisted together at the top and bottom freeing the wire to be twisted out of the fence fabric. They are perhaps 6-7' long. I tried various configurations in pots and ground using 3, 5, or 6 wires. I twisted the wire into the soil and wired the tops together making some teepee type trellises. The plants LOVE this wire and have almost no problem climbing the trellises. In some pots (smaller type vines), I pushed both ends of the wires into the soil and it makes a nice fat balloon shape that are very nice when covered with vines. My visitors have all been very interested and complimentary of these trellises/support systems You just can't get any cheaper than the salvaged fence trellises. I would bet that you could find pieces of this kind of fence at the local landfill or recycling center. Good luck, spiderwoman...See MoreAny Ideas How To Get Burned Olive Oil Out Of Pan, Please?
Comments (27)i see this conversation is a few years old, however it's 2016 and i'll bring it up to date: last night ..... very badly burned olive oil in the bottom of a not-very-spendy stainless steel pan .... the fixer: BARKEEPERS FRIEND .... HANDS DOWN ... i read this site and a few others to get the fix and b/c i own barkeepers friend {bf for easier typing} i tried it ... amazing ... completely AMAZING ... the oil was heavily burned on and i figured i would probably not get it off ... i shook the bottle, squirted a bit in the bottom of the pan, enough to cover the oil burn, let it sit for ...... uh, maybe 15 mins {i'm impatient} took my non-abrasive green and yellow scrubber and in a circular motion started scrubbing the oil off .... took me about three tries, each time leaving it on the burn a bit longer, not overnight, and voila ... amazingly the burn is gone .... thanks for all the advice here .... i appreciate it ... bf is a great product and i will not be without it now .... i've belonged to gardenweb for about 20 years, before it became so *sophisticated* and this is a wonderful site, sooooo much information on so many topics ... i love it here .... thanks again .... darlene...See MoreTotal redo of kitchen and living area - open to any ideas please!
Comments (20)Thanks you Sena and benjesbride. I came up with this before I saw what you posted so I will look more closely at your details. I really like the idea of the dining area where I have it if I can make it work. It just feels more natural with those windows. Also, in my plan I have cut down the pantry to just the back wall of shelves. Will maybe need to use a sliding door there. Barn door? So trendy! :) I would love a wall there so I can also have coat hooks on the other side and as a bit of a barrier when you enter the house. Also, the weird cabinets behind the arm chairs are there because I couldn't figure out how to put a wall there - which is existing and must stay. There is no overhang on my island drawing but irl there will be - probably 12 inches. I know - less than recommended but it's what we have now and it works. So - does this layout work? Is it too tight? The furniture is also the dimension of what we currently have. I don't love the layout of the upper cabinets - but not sure how to arrange them. Thanks for looking and reading!...See MoreEryca Fambro
