I am surprised by these reactions. I love that look although I prefer it with a bit more wave. If my hair were not so stick straight and fights every wave, I would go for it. Claire's hair has the side part Ida mentioned. It does make a difference, as do the waves.

I'm not crazy about it but with all the hair salons closed, that's going to be my look in a few more weeks, I'm afraid.

That's about the most I can get out of my hair-- in fact, I have to really work to get that much wave and it barely lasts an hour, if that. Most of the women you show also have very fine straight hair-- just like mine.

I am not bent out of shape by the posts-- but I never get the point of these bashing emails.

It doesn't look like a style to me at all. Just kinda hanging there. "Claire's" style has way more movement and a side bang, which changes the whole look.

It looks like minimal styling, and that may be the point, or it may be styled a lot to look like no styling. I think a lot depends on the texture and natural volume of hair. If you have thin, fine, limp hair, I don't think it works that well.

It may also be a so-done-with-beachy-waves statement.

ETA: It looks like, I didn't do anything to my hair today. And that's perfectly okay. I'd totally do that if I could get away with it.

Funky, It wasn’t meant as a bash; I am truly curious why one would choose this style. I do see it as a choice as my gd, who has full beautiful hair after a 5 minute blowout, chooses this middle part hanging strands, no body look.

Not particularly - pretty boring. That's what my hair looked like when I got married 42 years ago. Even though I was young then it was still an uninspired haircut.

I like it. It looks like natural, healthy hair. They wash, they go, minimal fuss. No curling iron, no flat iron, just hair. Yep, I like it!

I require a lot of fuss to get to that style.. as does Saoirse.. and I am pretty sure Greta too. It requires styling while drying, curling iron or beach wave iron and a heck of a lot of product.

Doesn't bother me, doesn't strike me as anything that should foster strong feelings one way or the other. It's a simple haircut that would work better with some hair types than others but that's pretty much any cut. The center part is a young woman's game IMO but other than that, move that part over a bit and it could be flattering to a lot of women.

I love Margot Robbie's hair. She has the face for short hair, and it works for her because of her long neck.

My first thought -- oh, they look like real people. I think that is what most people's hair looks like a lot of the time.

If you are thinking of celebrity hair, you are talking about a lengthy blow dry, maybe some curling iron, a lot of spray, falls, and even teasing (yes they still use that). You might be able to sustain that for a shoot, with editing rights, but its not real life hair.

Like funky art....that is what my hair DOES. Fine, thin, straight.....too long and it is stringy, too short and it just flies around. Glad to know I am in style!!!

Today I learned there is such a thing as a Beach Wave Iron.

As someone who has fine, straight hair, it is really hard to have any sort of option. I would try that, but anytime I've had any type of wave, it just unwinds. When I'd go to the blowout bar, I have them focus on volume but just keeping the ends under. But, yes, they have look books, and you can choose the type of blowout you want.

I see those as "grow out" length... in the transition from short hair to long, and especially when your bangs have finally grown long enough that you can cut a "straight" line. lol!

I think that style looks great, it's the best I can aspire to.

If I could get my hair to look that good I'd be deliriously happy.

Some people have "good" hair, others of us don't. My hair is super fine, super frizzy, and I've spent decades trying to figure out how to style it so that I'm not the object of people's scorn. I've tried perms, relaxers, keratin treatments, hot oil, and every other hair product under the sun.

Posts like this just make me feel bad. I've tried everything I can to make my hair "look good" - and the styles posted here would be like a dream come true for me.

I wondered how people feel when reading these comments. At first I thought, well, we're just stating personal opinions about hairstyles, but I can certainly see how this could make others feel like they don't measure up somehow.

I've had good hairstyles and I've had bad hairstyles and I've had styles at all points in between. There have been many times when I've felt very insecure about my physical appearance because of my hair. I know that hair is not any indication of the value of a person, but somehow we can manage to tie up a good deal of our self-confidence in it.

I like discussing hairstyles but don't want others to be hurt by opinions expressed.

I’m another one with fine straight thin hair. It really sucked in the ‘80’s.

To add to my nothing hair, I have a round face so that’s a terrible length for me.

And I have a high forehead with a widows peak so I keep bangs.

Except I have no fewer than three cowlicks in my bangs so they may or may not behave on a given day.

So I’ve given up, grown it into this style only long and with poorly behaved bangs. Some women have great options with hair and some of us don’t. (But think of all the money I save!)

Heh, guess I've been so fashion forward for a long time. This is pretty much what my hair looks like when the blowout by my hairdresser is gone and I revert to my normal wash and wear "style." I have a side part, though.

I have horrid hair!! Always have...been the bane of my appearance for years. 😂 Baby fine, soft, not super thin, but when it’s as fine as mine it seems thin even if you have a gabillion strands, lol. My natural color is “dirty dishwater blonde” as my mama used to say.😂 Sooooo, needless to say, I need a very well done cut, and a color genius to look the way I want, lol. My hair would look exactly like Saoirse’s if I parted mine in the middle and didn’t blow dry. Of course, I don’t have her striking face, nor her youth so I could not pull that off. For me. Hence why I am jonesing to get back in my stylist‘s chair. Is it bad that somedays I can’t tell if I miss church more or my stylist?? 🤣

That's what my hair looks like, but about 4-5" longer so I can put it up and get it out of my face when I want to. I don't color it, don't own a blow dryer or anything besides a brush and a bunch of barrettes and hairpins. I really don't care who likes it or not, I like it, and it's easy, cheap and no fuss, which are the most important factors for me.

Same as you, Nini.. and others.. I have a lot of hair but it is baby fine (the flip side is that it is so much silkier than others I know with thicker hair). It takes a great cut, good product and time/effort for me to have hair that looks like "no effort" to those of you with different/better hair. Oh-- and coloring-- because the damage from highlights actually gives me much needed texture and volume.

I don't know Saoirse personally-- but I know her hair. I could guarantee that her hair isn't "wash and go". Just to get mine to turn under takes work (and no-- no cut makes it do so on its own. It does not even BEND without product and styling).

No worries-- I am not looking for sympathy for me or the stars called out above lol. It is what it is.. but I would like to educate those who think it's so easy to add curl, wave and volume. It's not. My sister (who has gorgeous thick, curly hair) didn't understand until she had a daughter who inherited hair much like mine.

Hair to me is similar to skin color, or eye color. It tells you absolutely nothing about that person. However how other people judge based on those relatively immutable characteristics sure tells us a lot about those other people.

I'll bet those hairstyles are not as natural & carefree as they appear.

Anyway, my hairstyle looks similar to the ones in the original post, except it's a layered wedge in the back, and more asymmetrical in front - no center part for me. Mine is *almost* wash & go - I use a bit of moisturizing product and a comb. And the first thing I do every morning is spray some water on the crown of my head and comb my cowlick smooth - that's it. I am very happy with it. One thing I'm almost certain of is I have zero coloring/dye in my hair and they almost certainly do.

It's true that when one has enough youth and beauty, one can pretty much look good in almost anything - even rags and a rat's nest hairdo.

I don't care for that style either. It looks to me like the hair needs to be brushed :) It is also my suspicion that those looks are not the easy wash and wear they purport to be.

Also prefer side parts as IMO there are very few people whose faces are symmetrical enough to flatter-- or be flattered by --a center part. I also do not like the "consciously uncoupling from hair color" look many of these photos also feature.

Yes, Ida! That was the only reason for my post. Nothing more than that. Due to my lovely gd and some of her friends choosing that style, along with some celebrities, I was merely taking a poll to discover if I am truly behind the fashion trends. I don’t like the look. Period. I can love, like, admire, those choosing, or needing to wear that style, but judging.? Holy smokes!!

And when I see my beloved gd with this look I think, as KSWL stated, “... it needs to be brushed”. It DOES NOT mean I see her in any negative way whatsoever. She is perfect to me. About a thousand years ago, I was a runner. I had a nice little runner's body. But then I got sick and couldn't run anymore and I sure packed on the pounds. It made me feel so bad about myself.

A friend was asking me to go out to some clubs with her and I told her that I looked hideous and couldn't stand to go out in public looking so out of shape....

She just looked at me with her mouth hanging open.

She had struggled her whole life with her weight and has always weighed a lot more than I do. I was only thinking of myself when I said I looked hideous and I honestly didn't even "see" her size, she was just my friend in my eyes. But I insulted her nonetheless. I still cringe when I think about it.

We often say things only thinking of how we see the world. Posting photos of young, thin, attractive white people and lamenting how awful their hair looks can make a portion of the world who can never look like that feel badly about themselves.

There is a whole lot of pressure out there for young women - particularly for young women of color - to have their hair look a certain way. If someone had posted a picture of their actual granddaughter looking this exact same way, people would be gushing about how beautiful she was.

As a rule, that hairstyle is not very face flattering. I mean, if you are gorgeous then I suppose it's OK, but if you have some flaws in your features, it's not very flattering at all. But, seems to me the parted down the middle style has been the style of choice for youngsters for a long time now. I kinda miss the big hair days of yesteryear.

Hair, full stop, is immutable. Hair STYLE is not. Hair DYE is not. Please be clear that I am opining on the STYLE and COLOR, not the iMyron sic characteristics of a person’s hair, either ethnic or non-ethnic. And I am offended IF you believe that is what I was doing when it so clearly was NOT. SometImes there is no agenda, hidden or otherwise. There is no underlying meaning, no message to García. Sometimes an opinion about a hair style is just an opinion about a hair style.

Because, Patriceny, people, especially on here, are inherently kind. If you posted a pix of YOUR gd with crazy clown hair all here would say something to the effect of “ she’s lovely”. if you’d said you didn’t care for her hair they might agree, or not, but would still say she is lovely. We are, by a large margin, a kind group.

Patrice, I think you offer a valuable perspective. I'm not interested in arguing or debating anyone who disagrees, but I appreciate the very fact that you made it known that there are other perspectives. Thank you for speaking your heart. I am learning from someone who is dear to my heart and with whom I have only been friends for a couple of years that there are ethnic sensitivities I know next to nothing about. It's good to hear one another... really hear one another.

Patriceny, I am not an ethnic looking person, but I do have the darkest brown, quite curly hair. I basically like my hair. One day I was long overdue for a haircut and went to a blow dry place because my husband and I had an event and without a proper cut my thick curly hair gets very unruly and I just wash and wear. So the stylist is someone who is quite obviously ethnic and wearing her dark brown hair totally straight a la Kim K. When she is done with my hair she tells me, There, your husband is going to like this so much better. I was utterly stunned. First, that she would insult my hair and second that she lives in a world where a husband would disapprove of his wife's hair, or that a woman would be with such a man. If the stylist had had naturally straight hair, I would not have given the incident much thought, but the amount of self loathing her comment suggested floored me.
