Dining room area...chandelier center? dead space? what to do?

Comments (150)Well this thread has almost reached its end. I think that dianalo and lax have so many good points. Lots of others also but I can't go back again and make note of all of them. For the most part the parents are trying so hard and are doing the best they know how. I don't know how anyone can ask or want more. I made a point of saying we ate dinner together every night. We did. And that it didn't matter where you ate together ...in a tent or where ever. We talked and laughed and cried and sometimes I yelled and stormed at the kids too. It was not all perfect and rose colored. My DH and I did the best we knew how given the patterns we grew up with .I think we did a great job. Our kids are well into adult-hood now. They have a range of behaviors that are full spectrum from in/out of jail and mental illness to productive well-adjusted employed to alcoholic to sweetest and kindest to most self-centered impossible out of control anger...this is the same person...all in this one family...it is also parts of the other 2 children. We all ate at the same table and loved and learned together. All of the children have told us in recent weeks how much we mean to them and how much they love us...while one or another was exhibiting the above behaviors in the past months . As parents there is simply no job that is harder or more heartbreaking or more rewarding. Most of us try to do our best. We ate together and I am the first to admit that sometimes we would have been better off being in separate rooms. So be it. We did the best we could and the kids know this. I know this...I still feel guilty every day for the times that I made big mistakes. I am trying to let that guilt go. But when the phone rings in the middle of the night...it all comes back. This started as a conversation about the DR. Yes we have had one since 1979. Has it made a difference in my life or DH's or our children's ? No. Has the time we have spent with them reading stories in their room ? Yes...more than any other time ever ever spent they still all talk about the books that we read them. Comments (16)Hi everyone. There is no seating at the island. The issue really is that the doors make the placement of the light fixture seem more off center than it really is. Hard to show that in my photos bc I can’t get the whole room in one picture. If there were no doors there, I don’t think people would notice. I put the table centered under current placement of light fixture and put chairs around it. On the left it’s about 40-41 inches away from the island and it seems a little tight. I guess I also have to center the table in front of the doors, and then see how close it is to the island. If it’s too close I may have to change to high hats or a high fixture as someone suggested. I have 3 teenagers so my kitchen is always busy. Comments (13)Our previous home and our dining furniture were destroyed by a storm back in January so everything in the space will be new. I was going to wait until the house was nearer completion to decide exactly what furniture I will put in the space, beginning with the table and chairs and going from there. I’m not even sure if I want a hutch in the space or not as it will crowd the space and limit me in the future if I need to use table extensions for larger gatherings. Plus, there is a 30” wall between the kitchen and dining room (shaded in pink). Comments (4)Your first photo shows litter boxes placed below an electric piano. If the piano is so seldom used that you can keep litter boxes below it, pack it up—store it or sell it. Put a room divider SCREEN in front of the litter boxes if they have to remain here. However, it is much better to put such things as far as possible from where people gather. These should not be visible from the front door! Nothing should go in the open space of the 2nd photo. It's the entry to your living area and needs to be at least 36" wide, though 42" is preferred. Not every open spot is wasted space. In the 4th photo there is a door on the right wall between the counter and the railing. The space in front of it is pathway that must stay open. You have to allow space behind a door for it to open properly. As to the rest of the photos, I do not understand most of the scribbles. Also, the photos are too narrow and too dark to see the rooms. Turn on all the lights in a room. Bring in a portable FLOOD LIGHT if necessary. Take a photo from each corner standing against the wall. Outside light is less glaring if the day is overcast, so won't wash out the interior when taking photos towards a window. You can solve some of your storage problem by going through your cabinets. Get rid of anything broken. Give to charity anything that you do not use. This means extra vegetable peelers to plastic storage containers to pots and pans. If something has sentimental value it should be stored with similar items where it can be seen. Do you have a section of wall where you could put a kitchen cart? If your kitchen is wide enough you can put a small one in the center like an ISLAND. Storage caddies can go on the inside of a closet DOOR or CABINET. 4 years agoThanks for answering Peter. It just seems to be in a more awkward position like that, mainly due to it looking squashed by the pony wall and then leaving a large space by the window. If it was turned back the other way, had a large rectangular rug under the table, and all the other things against the aquarium wall were moved it would be a better start.
However, if you are set on that direction, I think some tall plants or plants in taller plant stands in front of the window would look very nice. Also, I know it's not ideal, but if you switch out with a chandelier that has a chain, you can do a small swag with a ceiling hook to recenter it if you wish to move the table. Something similar to this illustration. I know it's not as clean looking, but an option.
