New addition - Fukushu Kumquat

My husband went to Costco for groceries and came home with a large potted Fukushu Kumquat. I had to google it because I had never heard of that variety. From that, I understand that it is a cross between kumquat and mandarin, with round fruit. Can anyone tell me more about it? It is currently about 5 foot tall, with a single trunk, then lots of healthy dark green leaves, with some new light green growth at the very top. It is in the 5 gallon pot it came in and we have had it a couple of weeks. We would like to transplant it to a large pot we have. Should we wait or transplant now?

I would transplant now, before it gets any more new growth.

i think fukushu is one of the better kumquat varieties, and nice fruit with very ornamental leaves. I think all kumquats are relatively slow growing compare to some lemon var..

Thank you, a great source of info. I should of thought of that as my husband and I first met as students at UCR.

Well, you can, but remember when you prune citrus, you prune away the fruiting part of the branch. Citrus produce flowers at branch tips. So, pruning them then prunes away most of your crop :-) I would pose this question to the Four Winds folks. They do so much with container-grown citrus and would be able to give you the skinny on trying to grow a pummelo in a container successfully (meaning you get fruit). I can tell you that in the ground, pummelos get very large. Large fruit, large leaves, large tree. The Cocktail is super sweet, but has a nice grapefruit taste. The Melogold is is a little less sweet, more "grapefruity", but still very, very sweet. I love the taste of grapefruit, but HATE that bitter aftertaste. I can't eat a grapefruit without putting either Splenda or brown sugar on it. I can eat both the Melogold and especially the Cocktail without any added sweetener. Love them. And for me, you get much more fruit and way less rind with these, than you're going to get with a pummelo. Patty S.

Kumquats are for sweet-n-sour lovers and I am not one of them actually. However, I was convinced to try them and I liked them a lot - kumquats are very citrusy, have strong and deep flavor. Nagami is a very sour type. Not for me. Not for fresh eating. Meiwa is the sweetest type, dry, small. Fukushu is a sweet-sour type, big fruits, very juicy. I would say that Meiwa and Fukushu fruits are different but equally good. However, Fukushu is a much, much better tree - bigger, more beautiful, greater output. I have them both.

I saw your other post but glad this one had the pic! Yes Houzz has been a PITA the past month but they are slowly working on fixing what they broke. Nice little fruit on that! Hope it hangs on till it's done and do keep us updated on its progress! Lots of blooms for more fruit too.

It’s also very, very healthy for you. I myself would grow one or a Meiwa tree. The seedling kumquat I grew was getting way to big. I would grow mainly for health reasons. A mature kumquat tree can also be very ornamental.

We transplanted it into a beautiful cobalt blue pot today and it is very ornamental. We have many citrus trees, including a meiwa kumquat, which is a couple years old and planted in the ground, but growing very slowly. Our soil is less than ideal, so trying this one in a container to see how it does.
