What can we do with this massive stone fireplace and textured walls?
Comments (12)Quite a house. Yes, the inspiration photo will work well. You'll need more substantial curtain rods. The Kaling curtains look custom (construction, installation, and color), but you can get a similar look from readymade with a length resewn by a dry cleaner who offers this service. Do you have a close up photo of the sconces over the fireplace? If you hate them, you can take them down, wrap them carefully, and store them in a box for the next owner. You can get an estimate now from a stone mason for a new fireplace, then install a new one when you are ready to remove the 1960's stone....See MoreWHAT DO WE PUT IN A HUGE DEEP NICHE ON RIGHT SIDE OF FIREPLACE?
Comments (11)I had something similar in a former home. I got some fresh-cut river birch logs to stack. They were bug-free and didn’t decay a bit. We lived there 13 years. Now, the new owners are trying to sell it, and I looked at the pictures online. The same river birch logs are still there, unchanged....See Morewhat should we do with this fireplace?
Comments (3)The brick looks OK, but a fire place is something that should be where people can sit and gather around and enjoy the warmth- don't know why they sometimes stick them in a far corner and this one is so close to window glass which could break if heat becomes excessive. Do you use it? Me, Id be tempted to remove it or brick it up and use chimney for a pellet stove in a better position - would have to see the layout of the room though....See Morewhat can we do about this fireplace?
Comments (16)I never understand the strong negative feelings toward step-downs. When we built the large family room addition on our home over 21 years ago, that's how the architect designed it. And honestly, it was a little tricky, coming from 2 rooms on 2 sides. But we never questioned it, and never would have thought twice had I not seen some posts on this forum. After that I made my husband crazy by telling him we needed to do something about it because people hated a step-down! Thankfully, he's a very calm rational guy. He reminded me that we never had one person trip or anyone express any concern while in our house. We hosted innumerable holidays and large parties, raised 2 children, had many elderly visitors, multiple dogs and a cat underfoot. No problem at all. When we did downsize and listed the house this year, our realtor never blinked twice about the step-down, we were under contract within 2 weeks, and we got very close to asking price. I'm just saying - if you don't think the step down will bother you personally, it shouldn't be an issue. But then again, I happen to think the pictures look really lovely as they are and probably wouldn't do anything with the wall and fireplace either....See MoreRelated Professionals
