Comments (7)Most cats will not reach into water. A few will (I've heard of one that actually snagged a fish), but most won't. My cats sit on the edge of my pond a lot watching the fish or even drinking out of it. One of them has taken a few half hearted swats at the fish, but jerks back when his paw touches the water. One cat even fell into the pond once when a rock became unsteady and tipped into the water. She got back out really fast! I would leave the fish where they are and keep an eye on the cats when they're in the same room. When you're not around to watch them, just keep the cats locked out of the room with the pond....See More'Pond' goldfish dying one by one in an aquarium
Comments (14)I do understand your question! your taddies and mosquito fish came in from the pond right? the pond with the muck in the bottom for the turtles? Muck and fish don't mix. The taddies and mosquito fish probably brought in parasites that came from the muck. the goldies from the pet shop were stressed from the move to the pet shop to your aquarium, so the parasites that the skeeter fish and taddies were carrying attacked them. The real problem gets back to the pond. there is no reason that you could not overwinter goldies in a healthy pond. Overwinter the turtles inside, but leave the goldies outside in a CLEAN pond and they will be just fine. You say your pond is in perfect shape...but you also say that when you stir up the muck on the bottom that fish die. That is not a sign of a pond in perfect shape, but rather a pond that has a serious problem going on. If your aquarium water quality check outs, then it is almost certain that parasites from the pond are killing the new goldies. Does that make sense?...See MoreHow to care for koi from pond to aquarium
Comments (3)Since you are not going to be monitoring the fish the best place for them is to keep them in the pond. It seems like you are new to fish keeping, so here's a few tips: First, try the pond forum here. It is much more active and they know several different fish, koi in particular. Next, a new aquarium (or pond, same thing) doesn't have the bacteria to handle the fish waste yet. The first few weeks are critical and you will not be there to handle say an ammonia spike. Even the worst green water in a pond is actually not a problem for fish. It bothers us much more (as we want to see them!). The only drawback is it can use up oxygen at night (not that Ive ever seen that in my pond) but as long as you have an air bubbler or splashing water from a fall or such it should again be fine. You don't say where you are in the US but unless it's Alaska the temperature in the pond should again be fine till you get back. Your pond sounds too small to winter over in it so transferring to the tank is best. My pond is about the same size but here on Long Island NY it only freezes an inch or so and I do winter over fish right in the pond, no heater....See Morestormwatcher
