Create Modern Exterior
Comments (34)I don't see where the OP said that the left side was an add-on. Even if it was, to my eye the house is well-proportioned as it is. "Would be nice if I could keep parts of the house siding intact not to add to the cost of redoing the entire homes siding." The brown roof, warm-toned stone and existing cedar are attractive in themselves, look good together, suit the contemporary style of the house and are in good shape. None of those things are ultra-modern and if they're not changed then an ultra-modern piece on the bedroom area will not look good. All that needs replacing is the warped cedar on the (left) bedroom side. I suggest replacing that section with similar diagonal wood, perhaps in a colour closer to the cedar on the rest of the house. LOL it's a well-established response on Houzz to convince the OP that their house is attractive as it is, and try to talk them out of a remuddle....See MoreCan I build a deck over exterior vents to create a front porch?
Comments (4)Even with that grate, a lot of moist air is going to be dumped under the porch from the dryer vent. I wouldn’t worry about the bathroom vent, but the dryer is an issue. Could you reroute it outside to vent above the porch? I’m not sure how many bends you’re allowed. But having it dump out anywhere near your living area in general is not ideal. Who’d want to sit on the porch and have hot moist air blown at them?...See MoreHelp me - exterior paint color issue!
Comments (13)Wow thank you all so much for the recommendations!! I should have included that I am trying to decide on door color- I want to give it a pop, but without adding too many colors… that gold sounds nice! I thought an orange or red would give that effect too? Thank you for the compliments on how it is already painted… it may just be because it’s still pretty new to us and we haven’t adjusted… or perhaps the idea on just painting the window and garage trim the same green as the house could be the ticket! I proposed that to my husband who said he didn’t think that would look very good… I can now say I got feedback on houzz!! Lol!! I may play a little more with the color apps…...See MoreHelp me plan exterior colour scheme on 110-year old brick semi
Comments (5)Personally, I like the "eyeliner" look of dark window sashes with light window trim that is common on historical buildings, and on your house right now. I think it looks more interesting than sash and trim the same. Whether it's black and white, black and another color, or two other colors entirely, I would recommend choosing two colors, one dark and one light. They can be the same shade in different intensity, i.e. black and charcoal, or navy blue and a lighter gray-blue, or totally different, like black and white or navy blue and cream. Then use these 2 colors to create detail and contrast throughout your exterior trim. If you want to add a 3rd totally different "pop" color, that could be on a place like the front door or small detail trim areas throughout. In rainyseason's photo, the "dark" color is black, the "light" color is charcoal, and the "pop" color is yellow. Whatever you do please don't paint the stone/cement blocks under the windows (or the brick, but doesn't sound like you plan to). Someone did on my brick victorian and it's really hard to strip back to natural color and frustrating....See MoreJennifer Bullard
